Sorry to post this here, but I need an answer ASAP.

Tried to start the bike last night (L1 ZXR400) and when you press the starter button all it does is make a clicking sound from where the battery is. I took the seat off and tried it again and the 'clicking' sound is coming from a small circular thing with a fuse at the back of it.

Anyone got any ideas what is causing it to do this? Could it just be a fuse?

Cheers.

Thing is I charged the battery only 2 days ago, and the ignition is staying fairly bright when I try and turn it over, normally when the battery was dead all the ignition lights would go really dim as soon as you pressed the starter button.

Is it possible that the battery is fcuked? Seeing as I've charged it 2 times in the last month, and it seems like it needs another go today.

Also, personally I consider it a bit rude, as lots of other people have questions they would liked answered asap, so why are you special?

I suspect it is the battery also, cold weather has seen lots of batteries dieing recently.
When you say 'ignition' is staying fairly bright, what do you mean?
The head lights being bright would be the thing to check. Can you bump start it?

check the fluid levels in your battery aswell
Ive noticed that if bikes are left on there side stand a lot and have a fluid battery it has a possibility of draining, if this be the case buy a gell battery. if the levels are low you can charge it as many times as you want and it wont make any diff
the clicking is your starter relay , not enough juice to turn your starter, a bump is fine.

one other thing to check if you have a multi meter or even using your sight is how well the charge is going in,
whilst on tick over check the charge in the battery, then carry on checking whilst revving slightly with lights on and off, it will change from 12 to 16 vlts depending this is if the alternator is doing its job.
if not id take it a bike electrician.

if this is wrong im sorry.
my old gpz had a button you pressed on the rev counter, it told you the charge and rate of charge , no meter needed

G, for once, get off your fucking high horse.

I needed an answer ASAP as I had a job interview this afternoon, and my bike is my only means of transport.

if there is plenty of juice in the battery, do the norm and check connections are clean, its possibly the starter soliniod, thats what will be clicking, cross a screwdriver across the two connections and see if it turns over

Well I charged the battery up and it started.

I'm hoping the alternator isn't on it's way out, my old man's got a manual for a GT750 that has directions for testing both the alternator and the reg/rec so I'll probably give them a look over the weekend.

Cheers for the replies.

What he said.

The "small circular thing with a fuse at the back of it" is the solenoid which is a type of heavy duty relay. It has two big metal terminals on top of it. If you short between them, the starter motor should turn. If it doesn't, your battery is probably duff. If it does, your solenoid is probably duff. They are about the same as one another cost wise

Or you could try jump/bump starting it.

Of course, it would be an idea to check you tightened the battery terminals down properly and that they are clean etc.

I answered your question, despite the fact I considered it to have been asked rudely. In future, I shouldn't bother it seems.

Incidentally, I expect you will need to find how to test your specific alternator and reg/rec as I believe they can often have different resitances etc.

You posted because you wanted help, which you got (and never thanked us for).

Next time don't bother asking, take it to a garage and get charged labour for the privelage.

Thumbs Down
