Hi folks,

I took the tank of my bike today to service the carbs, and on putting the tank back on I ran the engine for a while, gave it a few revs, etc. Got my gear on and started wheeling the bike out the garage when it cut out - The starter motor wouldnt even turn.

Turns out that the electrics (lights, starter, everything) die when the bars are in a certain location. If you get them set right the bike will start, but it will cut out as soon as you move the bars.

I tried blindly unplugging and replugging wires around the clocks, but it made no difference. Could it be the ignition barrel/lock itself?

Whats the normal procedure for fixing a problem like this? I can forsee it being long and frustrating unless somebody knows a good method.

Could it be caused by something shorting on the forks or steering rather than a wire coming loose?

Cheers,
Rich

You have a brokenwire somewhere around your headstock, usually go on the loom that comes out of the bottom of the ignition barrel. ALWAYS go in the friggin winter when its cold and goes dark early!

Its going to be a pian to find, just a case of wiggling wires or turning the bars back and forth to find out the one that causes the power outage.

Agreed. Inspect the wiring loom where it goes past the headstock, the insulation can wear away and cause a short. You might also have trapped a wire under a plastic or under the tank.

What they ^ said - you know what the problem is, and where it is. All you have to do now is find it Sad

Could even be a connection that 'looks' good but is being pulled just enough to break when you turn the bars.

I've had these in the past - they're character building Wink

happened to me on the cbr, its just a case of getting all the wires and having a look to see if the plastic round them is burnt, then reconnect them.

Wish it was that easy, I have a couple of times had the wire break but the outer casing stay intact causing an intermittent power loss. No sign of burning or chafing was evident. You can find the loom with the broken wire but you then have to find the indervidual wire then strip back the insulation, solder it up, re-insulate and tape it all back up.

Loply just PRAY you have trapped a wire under the tank, but sounds doubtfull if its when you move the bars. With this cold weather the cables will be stiffer to making the whole experiance more fun.............Good Luck! Confused
