I am looking for an engine/g.box unit of 350-500cc capacity. It would ideally be a two stroke twin, water cooled, electric start, chain drive. It is not to fit a specific bike but to power a three wheeled contrivance that I am contriving to contrive. The reason for "two stroke twin" is to keep the overall engine height as low as possible. I have been searching for several weeks but have as yet not come up with anything suitable. This I suspect is because for the past 25 years I have been totally satisfied with my R100RT, and have never really taken an interest in smaller capacity machines (silly me). Can anyone, please, advise me as to what I might find in the breakers yards, at present, that would fill the bill?

Hi

The electric start it what gives you the biggest problem. Only electric start 2 stroke bike of over 125cc I can think of was the Gilera NGR250 (excluding scooters), and a few even rarer 200cc Gileras.

Also for reasonable performance on a 2 stroke you need the space to mount the expansion chambers, which makes them a bit more bulky.

Beyond that you might well be looking at scooter engines which tend to be low but might not be suitable for connecting up to a pair of back wheels, or rigging up a starter motor onto a larger 2 stroke bike engine.

All the best

Keith

I think the scooter engine route is a non starter. Millions of pounds have been spent over many years in finding better, more efficient ways to reduce unsprung weight and then they go and make a mockery of it all and build the engine, gearbox and "back axle" as one great big unsprung lump.

there is an off road buggy called the Honda Pilot, these are equipped with a low rise 400cc 2stroke v twin cessna engine. no idea where to find these engines though...

(if this info is incorrect, its because that was what i was told by the seller i asked who had some stocked, not what i found out for myself) this was also some time ago. the pilots arent made anymore but im sure somewhere the cessna engines are available.

Part of the reason for the project is because ankle ulcers wont allow me to use a kick start.

Hi

Another thought. Think some of the quads use electric start 2 strokes, and I have a feeling some of these are sourced from snow mobiles and the like.

All the best

These little chaps seem to be unknown in Google land, although there are a few references to Honda pilots being used at "Adventure" centres.

Do rotax not do any engines? They make lightweight 2t engines, and i wouldn't be suprised if you could find one for your project.

You could try welding 2 rs250 lumps together. Now that would be interesting...
