Sounds to me like the throttle valve has stuck in the open position or had been put back in the wrong way round.

Other possabilities include a stuck throttle cable or the throttle needle having come adrift from the valve (it is held in place by a pretty flimsy clip).

Has anyone been messing with the carburettor recently?

I would be unscrewing the top of the carb, inspecting the throttle valve assembly and checking the throttle cable is moving correctly.

Check the throttle adjuster under the throttle handle and adjust it back fully to its start.

Now do the same for the actual carb adjuster which you undo the lock nut and screw it down fully, now adjust the the throttle adjuster under the handle bar again and set it to a sensible bite point (so you just pull it back to increase speed) if its still reving badly then its the carb Rolling Eyes

If the carb has been out and messed with, then expect time for it to be fixed right, they are robust but do have parts which are easily buggered if its been in the hands of an inexperienced person. Confused

As above the fourm members have some top advice here and will help you to sort out your prob the more info the better, try to get the manual it helps so much in avoiding mishaps and saves ££££.

All the best

If you unscrew the top of the carb (should be finger tight) and pull straight up, you will remove the throttle valve assembly still attached to the cable.

I reckon this has been put back in the wrong way by your mate. As you look at the throttle valve you will see there is a groove along one edge. This should fit over a 'tag' inside the carb which is on the right hand side of the carb.

So, you need to slide this assembly back in so the tag engages in the groove and so the throttle needle slides down into a small hole in the bottom of the carb (the main jet). When you have it in the right position, it should just drop in and you should be able to screw the cap back on without having to compress the spring any more than a couple of centimetres. To do this sucessfully it should be placed back in the carb absolutely vertical with the groove exactly facing the right hand side of the carb.

You should not need to force anything. Be very careful not to bend the throttle needle or damage the point of it. Keep everything very clean.

EDIT: The 'groove' and 'tag' arrangement might be on the left or the right side depending on the model of bike. At the bottom of the throttle valve you will see an angled cutaway. This should face backwards.

Hi, the chances are your mate has less of an idea than you do and has probably simply turned the idle screw all the way in so the bike idles ridiculously high. Its a flat headed screw that goes in the right hand side of the carb and raises the needle the more it is screwed in, check this first before taking apart the carb, Thumbs Up Dan

to add to bidman, its like a screw that you can adjust with your fingers as it has a big head (if you havent adjusted it before it will most likely be stuck) so you need a screwdriver that fits perfectly before you try, cos if yoy strip that your fucked

Having produced exactly your problem before, I'd agree with Stinkwheel.

Unscrew the top of the carburettor, and make sure the ramp is resting on the idle speed screw, not the slot. Turned through 180 degrees it can also go in as there is a slot cut in the slide to allow the cable to be installed. That results in the needle being far too far above the jet, so there is no restriction to the fuel flow -> wheee!.

Everyone with that type of carb must do it at least once I reckon. Smile

Merely turning the idle speed screw far too far wouldn't remove the spring back from the throttle, the increase in height just isn't enough. Putting the slider in backwards so it is much higher than it should be does. Embarassed

If you'll forgive the simplistic nature of my drawing and the slight inaccuracies (e.g. airflow left to right rather than out of the page at you and the idle screw having the main jet wide open), then the attached diagram shows the potential problem. Turn the throttle assembly (assy.) through 180 degrees and its base sits on the idle screw, far too high. Screwing the idle screw in lifts the throttle assembly so more fuel is let out of the needle jet, so the engine revs higher at idle.
