Well, i just got back my cgs top end and.. it has a bent inlet valve (explaining a previous fueling problem)

COMPLETELY fudged cam followers and VERY shagged cam.. also a scored cylinder...

Does anyone know a cheap place to source these? i know skinkwheel has delt with small honda engines quite a bit..

How in the hell do you get the cam followers out? theres a sloted thing on the side, it spins and spins, i can see where spining it lines up a bolt hole.. but can't do anything else with it Sad

Bit of a bummer to say the least.. i'm guessing a new engine would be a cheaper option but so much would need to be change with it then it would be better off a new bike.. when this was free it seems a shame Sad

Hi

For new cheap Honda spares try David Silver Spares.

Being a pushrod engine it should be fairly easy to strip the top end down once the engine is out of the frame.

All the best

Keith

Sorry pal. I have never worked on a push-rod engine before. Don't know the slightest thing about them. All the small hondas I have had were either 2-strokes or OHC.

Given the depth in the engine this involves, a replacement engine might be easier? Or it looks like you might be following the whole of chapter 2 in your haynes manual.

Thanks for the replys,

Ah i was mistaken then, i was thinking c90?

Ive used david silvers a fair few times, i forgot they did pattern parts, so the may help.. (are pattlern valves generally ok? hmm..)

Ive highlighted the bit holding the cam followers in.. do they look familiar to anyone? Confused

As for the current state of the engine, its guts are splayed for all to see, the bottom end is all closed up but the top end is access all areas!

One other thing, how much is a rebore? considering the head is out of the engine so all they would need to do is make the 'ole...

I fear a new engine might be the more sensible option, but that would mean replaceing ALL the electrics (replaced and soldered all the connectors on the loom allready Sad ) and more or less the entire bike, so makes it barely worth it, this has been a learing process, i'd really love for this poor little abused engine to be helping me tear up the peak district this year Sad

Again, thanks very much for the replys Thumbs Up

Sorry, still no wiser. I have worked on C90 engines (hell, ther is one in my bedroom stripped to the gearbox) but they are chain-driven overhead cams too. Only the REALLY early ones are pushrod.

I can see from the picture HOW it works, but I have never had those bits (or even similar bits) in my hand. I am a very visually orientated person I'm afraid.

How well did the engine run before you stripped it?

You might get away with another five or ten thousand miles out it without spending any money. Try straightening out the valve in a vice, you've got nothing to lose. If the cam and camfollowers are just scored, you could try cleaning them up with light wet and dry to try and get a smooth contact.

It's a cg125 after all. It won't cost you anything to reassemble it reusing the old head gasket - If you can get some more usage out of it on the cheap, you'd be a fool not to. Now you've had the top end off you will find it easier next time so it's no great loss if you have to rebuild it the proper way soon after.
