Rear sprocket moves ??

On my KLE the rear sprocket seems to be a bit, well, erm sloppy for want of another word.

It looks like it's mounted on some sort of rubber in the hub, how much play should there be on it, I think it's making adjusting the chain a pain as it's either goes too tight or too slack and then if it's slack it feels rough at slow speeds like the chain is trying to hop out of the teeth. It's got me a bit worried, I don't fancy a rear wheel lockup Confused

Correctomundo. It is called the 'cush drive' all motorbikes have one. It is there to dampen the shock of the drive chain engaging, makes the ride comfier and reduces damage to the wheel and hub.

A small amount of movenent is normal but it is a wearable componant. There is a series of rubber blocks on which the rear sprocket carrier sits, they compress and wear after a time. Kawasakis are well known for it. If the play is excessive, you can pad them out using slices of inner tube. If you take the rear wheel off, it will be obvious what is happening.

I honestly wouldn't buy a new one. They are overpriced and not all that tight a fit in the first place, the inner tube thing seems like a bodge but is a well known way of doing the job. Mine actually needs it doing, pulled up at the last MOT for excess play and even the tester said that's how he does it. I will stick some inner tube in there next time I change the tyre.

Cheers, I thought it would be something like that but I couldn't find any mention of it in the service manual.

I'll drop the wheel off at the weekend and have a ganders to see how bad it is, I suppose it depends how much slack there is in it but if it looks good I'll try the innertube idea I've got one kicking around in the garage somewhere.
