Hi guys,

As I am too tightarsed (poor) to do my DAS, looks like I'll be doing my A2 License (Few hours lessons, then test).

Just wondering how a GPZ500S will hold up to restriction, how it is restricted, how easy kits are to obtain (buggered if I'm paying £150 for washers).

Will I have to take it to a dyno afterwards?

Cheers,

Toby

Nah won't need dyno'd

Restricted via washers near carbs

£140 for the F.I kit to be delivered to a garage next day delivery. Then fitting is anything they charge you.

Gpz's seem to be commonly restricted. Your best bet is to find bikes that are already restricted and contact the people that own them to see if they are still 'using' them. It's easy to take them out or put them in, say you'd give them £30 for them (emphasis on the fact that from a warranty point of view, these discs are now completely useless in any other bike and if they are tampered with)

So, now that they know they are worthless, say you'd take them off their hands for £30 if not less. Razz Join VD and ask on their :wanted: bike parts section, they have a wider audience.

Maybe a big single like a Vigor 650 etc may be a better option?? big singles dont suffer like multis when restricted.

Yes, I've seen a couple of GPZs on eBay that are already restricted. Don't know what side-effects it has other than the power restriction itself though.

Here hopefully is a link that Instigator posted to me when I was consering taking out my washers on the GPZ. The photo breakdown is actually for an ER 5 I think but I think its the same for the GPZ. Also you could do a search for an earlier post by me under the heading De- restricting my GPZ. some info as well. Here is the link.Hope it works. Thanks for that!

Never heard of the Vigor 650! Good bike? How much they usually go for? Is there a honda model code (CBR, CG, etc)?

Thanks

(Code is FX650 for those interested and makes 39 BHP)

My GPZ is restricted obviously some loss of power but if you think about it. 59 BHP down to 33 BHP is not to bad - not like restricting a Ninja from 105 BHP down to 33 BHP. I can still get 105-110 on my GPZ - with a good wind and head down etc etc Laughing Laughing Wink Dont think its done the bike any harm, the garage didnt "suck their teeth" and go oh no when they restricted my bike! Laughing

Have you got your GPZ yet I am MOTing mine in the next week or so, she's restricted with all the paperwork. I'll let you know how she gets on, I know I live quite away from you but we may be able to sort something out if you are interested. I'd like to see her go to a good home Laughing Laughing

To be honest GPZ's don't take to well to restriction as well as the other 500's though there OK.

You will loose the powerband of the GPZ which is usually at 7krpm and it will feel totally flat but it will still be rideable I spose.

Your best bet IMO, is get a GS500 or an ER-5 both are much better suited to 33bhp.

I did the A2 and bought a bike that was under 33bhp.

Makes sense to me...

I was riding a restricted GPZ for a while. It's OK but smoothens off the power delivery.

My R reg GPZ500s is restricted via a 'kit' which cost me £170 fitted,
I was told you cant fit the kits yourself, you need an 'approved' fitter to do them, even though the monkey didnt put the carb back on properly and had to do half the job myself.

One place I rang wanted £150 to restrict the GPZ using the jetting or something? dunno, didn't fancy that kind of messing.

still got plenty of oomph restricted, enough to give you the odd fright,

Don't need to get her dynoed afterwards if you have the washers fitted, howver your insurance company may request to see your little bit of paper to say your GPZ is 33bhp.

You dont have much choice in restriction other than run the risk of being caught without them in.

However in saying this there was a set of restrictors on ebay for sale, but you would still need the paper work to go with the kit.

Well your GPZ must have been flat all together, mine definetly flies at 7krpm....

all the way to about 108mph.

If you have no intention of leaving the restrictors in place, why bother?

Your license though, I passed my test a year ago in two weeks, 33bhp isnt as bad as everyone makes out,

Infact its a damn sight more satisfying keeping up on twisties with larger machines when you know your is half the power of, for example an SV650s

Nah Wasn't flat altogether it had enough power but the best thing about GPZ's was the power hit from 6500rpm right through to 10000rpm.
And on 33bhp bikes I know this is dulled down alot or totally non existant.

Oh and my GPZ used to flie up to approx 125mph when it was at its hayday before the topend commited suicide. Laughing

Ahh, nice.

Never rode my GPZ unrestricted so don't know what I'm missing. Made the most sense.

Just changed oil, and noticed some erm...possibly worrying noises/symptoms... Sad

Resticting my gs500 was easy,

1. Firstly appeal for somebody to give you the restricters (I got some carb sliders for free, but they were for the later model).

2. If the top option doesnt work, contact somebody that has the kit, and ask politely for them to measure the dimensions of the washers, or find this information out online.

3. With dimensions go to local hardware store and find a suitable match, this will cost approx. 15p

4. Insert washers between carbs, then book a dyno approx. £30

Had my bike dynoed at 27.01BHP, i dont get the full restricted power im allowed, but i saved over a ton, and who says there staying in Wink

Hi

To be honest given the cost of restricting a bike with an official kit it might be cheaper to to DAS.

Charlottes GPZ500 was dynoed at 45hp. They do not need to loose that much power.

All the best

Keith

Fit a throttle stop (as Davo mentioned in another thread). Then take it to a dyno and get them to set it up for 33bhp. Make it adjustable so it can be messed around with at the dyno place.

My mate mike has one, they are a semi trailey tipe bike with no serious vices.

Restrictor is availiable from honda, its adifferent throttle bracket on the carb as far as i remember.

But mine was dynoed at 54bhp. Smile

But that was only shortly before the mysterious cutting out and non starting when warm though Confused
