After being told that the GPZ500 doesn't take too well to restriction, so I need advice on a good first big bike to get (Want to get test over and done with now, and I can't afford DAS)

Arrow Must be under £1100ish
Arrow Must be comfy
Arrow Must have some sort of wind protection
Arrow Must restrict to 33BHP well

Think that's about it, suggest away!

Kawasaki ZZR250 came to mind, imports though so may be hard to find Confused
Looks the same as the 600 and 1100, just smaller.

SV650 or TRX850 for something slightly sportier?

Can just about find slightly tatty examples of either for that money, just need to keep your eyes open.

Considered a big trailie? Can get them quite cheap and they should take fairly well to restriction as you still get a fair bit of torque with your 33hp.

Sorry, you old enough to do DAS?

If so do it - you may spend a bit more initially, but you'll save £200 on restrictors for a start! Try and get some cheap lessons on your cg maybe, then get as short a time as possible doing the DAS on the hired bike.

My thoughts exactly, do lessons on your 125 and just do a single day on a big bike, it's false economy to do it twice and you'll probably find a bigger bike easier to ride so you should breeze it.

If you can afford it at all, try at least one lesson on a bigger bike. You've done plenty of miles on the road already, so you know how to behave there and that is what they test you on regardless of what you're riding; all you need to learn is how to control a different bike and unless you picked up some seriously bad habits, that will come naturally Thumbs Up .

If you cannot, at least find out if you can find a pre-restricted bike in your area before you decide. The test will cost the same and fitting restrictors may well work out more expensive than the lessons.

There's no significant difference between the tests as far as I know - you get asked to do exactly the same things, by the way.

the bike must be 44hp or more for DAS and you cant push the bike to the side of the road if you stall it on the emergency stop like you can for the A2 test.

Other than that the test is identical.

Are you sure ?

On my DAS I was taught to move to the side of the road ASAP after coming to a stop, with or without the engine running.

While doing my DAS I was told I should push my bike to the side of the Road if I stalled it while doing an emergency stop.

I was told to push it regardless of whether I'd stalled or not as it's quicker than trying to piddle around getting into the right gear.
Certainly that's what I did on my test and nothing was mentioned.

I was told to do a rear observation (both sides), sort out gears, observe again and then ride to the side of the road, which is exctly what I did on my test (and it didn't earn me any comment from the examiner). They'll make you do the stop in some quiet side road, anyway, so it's not like you don't have all the time in the world for it Thumbs Up .

Yep that too, knew I'd missed something.

As for the rest of it though, the point with pushing is if your on a busy road every second might count before your rear ended so the quicker you can get out of the way the better.

E.G. you've braked hard from 60 on a main road so you could well be in top gear when you've stopped. By the time you've thought about it, lifted your foot and started dabbing the gears down you could have already moved a few foot by pushing the bike.

Swings and roundabouts and obviously its a judgement call depending on the conditions at the time.

I don't think either are wrong, but in my limited experience I think a quick push takes less thinking about in times of panic !

you can slip it to the side in 3rd.
although i honestly cant remember what i did on mine, but he watched me drop it down into neutral and im pretty sure he counted the gears to make sure i hadnt dabbed at it during the stop.

The instructor did mention that "If in doubt about your safety, just drop the bike and run" Very Happy, so I guess either would work. The stop seems to be mostly and about displaying control of the machine and acting safely in an emergency.

In an actual emergency, though, it seems like it'll be a choice between the following cars bonnet getting a dent if I do either of gears or push the bike, or my life if I just leg it; I know which I'd choose Shocked .
