Right, went for a good old gander at lots of different bikes today.

Basically again like my bandit topic, my bike will be used for:

1. Commuting through Manchester
2. Odd bit of twistie B roads when going the barn

Im not after a speed demon, like a CBR600

As long as it will sit at 80 mph without any fuss.

I like the look off these from sitting on them today.

Suzuki SV650 S - Nice looking, quite grunty and lovely sounding
Honda CBF 500 - Cheap and Cheerful
Yamaha XT660 Supermoto- They really appeal to me, and also quite cheap.

What you reckon?

Through town get the supermoto. Could get a bit vibey at 80mph for sustained periods but the manouverabitlity, wide bars, low down torque and high ride height (which gives excellent visability) will make it superb in town. As well as being a twisty B-road missile.

my SV cruises really nice at 70-120mph due to grunt of V-twin seem fine as most high speeds and screen helps not get hit by the wind

SV get my vote, not that i have one or anything Rolling Eyes

Are Supermotos quite heavy on maintainance though? I was looking at getting one... But not too seriously.

CBF500's aren't cheap and cheerful, they're quite expensive, the most expensive of the 500's I'd say.

I'd choose the SV personally.

'Full on' ones are, the ones based on a balls-out racing motocross bike like the WR450 or something. The XTZ motor is a big, liquid cooled four stroke and is well proven for reliability. It is the same motor as was in my MZ supermoto and I toured Scotland on it.

It is perhaps inaccurate to call them a supermoto as such. A better term would be a 'street-moto'. They are a good bit heavier and have longer service intervals than the traditional supermotos, make more sense on the road at the expense of the tyre-screaming, wheelying nuttiness of a proper supermoto (but without the 1500 mile or less service intervals and frequent engine rebuilds).

They are hard on tyres and chains by virtue of being a big single but I would have no worries about using one as my everyday bike.
