I'm modifying the garmin car charger to work with an audio jack and wired in to the bike.

Problem is both the wires for power came off the circuit board. Now can I just solder them back on or is there a special factory process? Will I damage the board, there is a tiny little box next to where I need to solder and since I'm cack handed with a solderer that's probably going to get covered in the blob.

Any other methods?

Just apply the hot iron to remove all traces of the old solder / wire remains. One of those suction solder removal things might be handy. Thread the new wire through the hole on the board and apply a tiny blob of fresh solder from the bottom. Dont be afraid of the solder spreading. Use small quantities, and if worst comes to worst, you can reheat and remove. Avoid prolonged heating of the board components. When doing my garmin, I replaced the fuse with a bike fuse in a weather proof housing. It made hard wiring much easier.

Would I still have to fuse it if I'm wiring it in to the clocks since they already have a fuse? If I do what size proper fuse instead of glass?

Cheers

what we used to do was to connect crocadile clips or similar heat sink type thing, to the other side of the board, so it soaks up any excess heat for you

A seperate fuse would be additional protection from current surges or short circuits. I cant remember what I put in, but I can have a look in the morning. Alternatively, check with garmin for the current rating of the fuse they put into the cigar lighter adapter and use something similar.

Another thing, Which way round would I wire up a phono jack for a mobile phone adaptor. The intention is to butcher a hands free kit so I can use on the autocom.

Best way to clean off the old solder is with copper braid. Just put the brain onto the solder, press down with your iron & the brain will soak the old solder up like a sponge.
