was there residential buildings on the side(s) of the dual?
if so the limit may not have been desided on the safe speed of the road but the noise from the road traffic.

No, no houses or anything thats why i couldn't understand it. I understand the need for it if there is a risk of anything happening but this was a dead straight dual carriageway in the middle of nowhere. (well, between Bristol and Weston ) The rest were all A roads, about 25 miles worth. All with limits

It always amuses (well, puzzles) me the way they put 50 limits on the well-travelled good condition roads and then keep the NSL on the single lane cart tracks leading off the main road. The A6 from Matlock to Buxton and indeed the Cat & Fiddle road spring to mind, as does the road across the top of the village where I live.
Since I crashed at the junction onto the main road, they've introduced a 40 limit on the section of main road running through the village. It very probably was needed, there are a number of very bad blind junctions which make it very difficult to see if anything is coming until the last minute - more so when they're doing 60+. However, there is a treacherous little road (gravel, potholes and tractors included) leading from the main road with maximum forward visibility of about 20 feet and barely enough room for one cars width which is a NSL. They went to the effort of posting it as a NSL too, rather than just keeping it the same as the 40.
Local council bureaucracy >= common sense. ____________________ I must not be a troll...
