Do you leave your computer on all the time or do you switch it off when u go to bed?
I heard someone left theirs on and the fan burnt out. so i always knock it off before I go to bed.
I want to run de frag thingie tonight so is it ok to leave it run while I`m in bed?
I don`t want to have to be climbing out the window at 2 in the morning cos the house has caught fire |

If your PC is just 'on' but not doing much, chances are even if the fan failed it wouldnt do much harm. But then the newer processor are a lot more fussy!
If its got a decent BIOS it'll be set to shut off if it does get too warm, so not much to worry about.
If you're doing a defrag, make sure you've turned off screen savers and hibernate/power save modes. Defrag doesn't like it when the screen saver kicks in. ____________________ Like a Yorkie - I'm not for the girls |

At home, mine was usually on for up to 6 months at a time, usually around a month or so I'd switch it off and give it a few hours break. At uni, I'm keeping both on permanently, I'm getting my money's worth! |

I turn it off , mainly cus I do everything I want to do and won't touch it till roughly 23 hours later, the computers at work are on all the time though,
not a climate change issue just a waste issue , in that wasting stuff for no real gain is kinda pointless , which is why I like note books the hibernate mode which allows you to go back into windows in about 5 seconds is a good compromise. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. I think it`s just habit, switching things off before I go to bed.
Anyway, I couldn`t do the de frag thingie last night. I tried but it said It can`t do it for some reason.

My media center PC stays on 24/7 and only reboots for updates. I turn off the surround sound system and tv/monitor tho.
my dev server is on 24/7 and hasn't been rebooted since it was built in January. it lives in the cupboard under the stairs, but will be moving to the server rack in my garage soon.

My desktop has a huff and starts bleeping when it's cpu gets too hot, and then if i ignore that it shuts its self off at 98 degrees i think. My BIOS also has a fan failiure warning built in. I expect yours probably does too.My desktop is OLD! ____________________ My Flickr |

Mine tends to be on from about 4-6pm - 12pm, then I always turn it off every night unless say downloading a film. ____________________ Northern Irish? www.nibikers.com |

My pc hasn't been switched off since the 2nd of january, except for the 2 weeks i've been on holiday (well 1 1 week holiday i forgot to turn it off)
So its been on for the past 9 month bar 1 week.
But the PC i had before that had probably been on for about 2 years solid
Bearing in mind the odd power cut etc....
As previously said, unless you got a program running that requires high processing power, HDD running at full tilt etc then i wouldn't worry about it. and defrag doesn't suck anything out of your PC so youw ill barely notice it running |
