Jacking up the bike

Hi, I need to jack up the front of my bike to take off the front wheel. Where are the points where I can put a jack under? Will the exhaust hold up or the oil sump bit? Thanks

what bike is it?

the exhaust might(if it's a 4cylinder, but it's iffy) easier to take the exhaust off, and stick a car jack on the oil sump (with a block of wood or something in the way).

but make sure your car jack won't go down by itself

if the bottoms of the 4 downpipes are level, you should be able to get away with a block of wood under all four (to equal out the weight) and car jack (or 2) under the wood. (use a rear paddock too)

might work ok (are the downpipes rusty?)

thx. the pipes are not rusty. i'll take a look later to see if they are level.

A piece of wood between the jack and the pipes or sump works for me

Unless you've got one of those central stands that takes the majority of the bikes weight, then it's not wise to jack up the bike by the exhaust. The best way is to lift up the front with an engine hoist and rope or strap around the steering head.

I find putting it on the side stand then jacking it up from underneath a good way of doing it. it's alot more stable than you might think

I certainly wouldn't put anything under the exhaust pipes. I stick a few breese blocks under the sump with a bit of wood on top. Get them under by pivoting the bike on center stand.

If you push the bike over towards the sidestand from the front, the wheel will come up off the ground. You can usually then prop a bit of wood or an axle stand under the engine or frame to hold it there.

thx guys. i took a look at the underside and the exhaust and sump were pretty much even, so got a jack and a block of wood and spread out the weight.
