Anyone used these guys? (Shoulda posted in Northern forum, but would never have got looked at!)

This seems a bit expensive:

Quote:
My price of £455 for a guaranteed pass includes full 500cc training for up to 12hrs and your test fee (currently £55).

Based in WA11 (St Helens I think)

Did my CBT with Stuart. He works for Grangier School of Motorcycling in addition to running his own school. Good instructor. No complaints at all. That seems to be about the standard rate in warrington. The fee reflects the fact that all additional training till you pass is included. You pay only the test fee. The way it works for them is that if you pass at the first attempt, they make a profit. If you take up to 2 attempts, they break even. More than that, and they lose money on you. With GSM https://www.piczo.com/grainger-som?g=4453148&cr=1 I had 5 half day sessions, 4 of which was on an ER-5. If you give either one of them a call, they will explain the details.

Toby, whatever you do stay away from Graingers, unless you want to ride round a carpark for a full hour while the instructor smokes several fags.
Well that was my experience of their services! I even had a valid CBT so was allowed out on the road too!

I can highly recommend Greg Lamb Motorcycle Training, I passed with them in 2001, and they are probably the best in Warrington and Chris the instructor is a very decent guy!

As for the place you posted I have never heard of them, plus it sound expensive though I spose its guarenteed you pass so if you don't you don't pay anymore (apart from another test fee) which is good.

My experience at Grangiers was completely different to what you describe. I cannot recommend them enough. Did both CBT and DAS with them. Passed first time. No shortage of riding time whatsoever. Mind you, if the instructor feels that your riding skills are not good enough yet for a big bike, they make you do additional sessions on a 125, which is fair enough. The only 1 hour I spent on the car park at Grangiers, was when I was on the ER-5 for the first time. The instructor needs to be convinced about your ability to control the bike at slow speeds, ability to cope with the weight and handling of the bike etc, before letting you out on the roads on a big bike. Letting inexperienced riders out on large bikes totally unfamiliar to them, is a surefire way of getting someone killed or injured. I'd be very wary of any school doing that. I haven't heard of any that does that.

It was on my own scooter, never mind a larger bike.

I would never recommend Graingers, It was Nigel btw the 'instructor' I had.

I di my (restricted) test with Graingers too, as well as 2 CBTs, and I have to say that I would disagree with you as well Craig.

They were great with me, and I still pop in to see Malc on occasion now almost 2 years later.

Hah, that's near me Smile

Think I've seen you at some traffic lights a while back (I'm on a red honda CG and live nearish to central station).

You bike blue? Think I saw it at that massive 3 lane road nearish to the catalyst museum.

Just got this mail, sounds like a nice enough guy... But £355 to ride my own bike to test standard?

Email wrote:
Thank you for getting back to me Toby........

The preparation for a restricted test is just as thorough.

I would reduce the cost to a total of £355.00 (£55 of which is your test fee).

Again I would train you one-to-one and not charge you a penny more should
something go amiss on the test day.

A re-test would cost you another £55.00 or whatever test fee is in place at the time.

Whilst I appreciate that you have covered 4,000 miles and this will help, I want to
prepare you properly for your test.

I'm currently quoting for a gentleman who did his DAS with another company in Manchester
and they operated on the £30 per hour and let's see how far we get basis. He never even got
to ride a 500cc machine!!!!

I was prepared to lower all prices to get you on a 500cc machine at £405.00 with a test date
in the very near future.

Test date availability changes constantly, but it ought to be possible to get a practical test sometime in
the next two or three weeks.

Let me make a sugggestion.

Come along to my home one day next week, meet me, have a tea/coffee and chat
and at the same time ride out with me for a couple of hours. Total cost just £50.00.

I'll give you instruction and the money you pay me will come off the final price should you
like the way we operate and want to go ahead.

This does not tie you in to Rev-Elation in any way, but lets me assess and train you and make
some progress whilst not asking too much of your funds initially.

I'm at home tommorrow, give me a call before 1200hrs (lunchtime) to discuss this.

My final pricing is therefore:-
£355.00 in total for a 125cc test.
£455.00 for the 500cc full DAS course.

Every good wish

Go for DAS even if you have to beg, borrow or steal the extra funds needed. It gives you so many more options after passing.

I suppose so, currently looking for bike projects I can make a little bit of cash on, nothing major, just getting something running, scrubbing it up, and selling on.
