Learn the area well. It can be a big advantage to know all the unmarked crossroads, stop signs, roundabout layouts ect

Get in loads of practice doing U turns. It's a big area for people failing.

Lifesaver look backs.....plenty.

Adjust your mirrors so you can't see through them without moving your head a little, that way he will see you deliberately looking.

Keep your distance yet make good progress when the speed limits go up.

Don't fall off - I believe the examiner will look unfavourably on minor points like that!

Seriously:

Have at least one lesson, no matter how long you've been riding. You'll get tips from the instructor on what the examiner is looking for.

Remember your glasses if you need them. Make sure all your paperwork is in order and that you haven't left it on the fireplace the morning of your test.

Learn to do a U turn. Most people fail on that. Find a bit of road and keep doing them until you've done 100 in a row without putting your foot down. Then you'll be confident on the test.

Practice a good dozen emergency stops. Use the front brake. Pretend to use the back brake.

Learn the test area. Ride around. So nothing surprises you on the test. Details are often on the website.

Make your mirror checks and lifesavers. Make them really obvious to they guy following behind you.

Cancel your indicators.

Get hold of the questions (and answers) that you might be asked before and after the test (maintenance and pillion questions).

Finally, keep your fingers crossed. There's always a bit of luck involved - any pillock on the road can screw your test up for you.

Just enjoy it. It's likely to be the best few days of riding in your life, no one ever forgets what it's like when you pass.

I would get up early and ride a while before each day started, and I rode around all evening after the day was done. I slept very little during the 3 days I did, and was so wired after my test I had a huge lump in my throat when told I had passed. All the way back to the riding school I was yelling at the top of my voice in my helmet.

If I was doing it again, I'd ride all the usual routes over and over. Just to familiarise yourself with junctions, road layouts, no-entry roads etc. Don't get too hung up on the U-turn. The other guy who was doing it with me had never ridden a bike before, and did it perfectly every time. I had spent the previous 6 months constantly practicing, and was so nervous the first time I did it, I went too slow and rolled over Very Happy

6 months later I won the 'Ride' U-turn competition though Thumbs Up
