Ok, some of you may know, im doing my A2's at the moment and doing:
Arrow Maths
Arrow Chemistry
Arrow Pysics

Quite hardcore but i find it ok, so ive decided that my destiny is Chemical Engineering mainly because of good job prospects, good money, i think its pointless going to uni for some courses which the degree isnt going to help that much.

So i applied to 4:
Arrow Bath
Arrow Loughborough
Arrow Sheffield
Arrow Nottinham

So, they have all offered me 300 UCAS points in 3 subjects which equates to 3B's my 3 A2s.

The couse it a Meng in Chemical Engineering with a year in industry. Thats 5 years in total Shocked so important i make the right choice!!!

So how do i decide?? i will give an out line of what i think of them (mainly as i think its going to help me by writing it all!!)

Arrow Nottinham
My least favourite, course is good but just didnt seem that great, well is a good uni and sure its a nice city just not for me. Confused

=> Unlikely i will go here. great place and can see how people love it just not for me i think

Arrow Bath

Lovely place, lovly uni and great deptment, i really like Bath as a place as big but not massive, is only 15miles from Bristol so ever get bored of Bath go to Bristol.

I like this part of the country and Bath itself is very pritty as a place and lots of student walking around the place when i been to visit (been twice to visit now)

The deptment is also recently build and think its great, lovely layout and have many massive pieces of machinary (they all do but theres was presented in the best way)

My friend that, out of pure coinsdence had applied to my course and 3 of the same unis as me and she really like it here, not that i would ever go somewhere just becuase someone else likes it but still a plus i think

=> Defernetly up there as one of my top, could see myself ending up there

Arrow Loughborough

Firstly, big cheers to Titz for helping me find out more about loughborough, good man Thumbs Up

Probably the best deptment out of all of them but not by much, is a nice area of the counrty and loughborogh the place seemed nice, if not a bit small but like how it was a large % of student populating the town. also a few miles to Nottinham if you get bored of Loughborough town.

This uni is probably the one were i could most likly take the bike with me as this is important, and as Titz pointed out some very nice roads around that area.

however, i found it very sporty, i knew it was going to be as it mainly a Sport and engineering uni but didnt think it would be a much as it was, seemed a bit of a cockfest aswell Confused

=> Dont like it asmuch as Bath, but better than nottingham and would be great for keeping the bike and like it town.

Arrow Sheffield

Again, thanks to Impaler for all my questions about the place, Another top guy!! Thumbs Up

Well, after my first of two visits i didnt like it, however i went back recently and loved it as a place. For a start the uni is nice and is the only City uni (all the others are Campus) and is very nice like that.

The department is very good and all the staff went to more effort by far than any of the other unis for the open day (for people that have applied there) and was very well done and afterward me and my dad went for a couple of beers in city centre and was very good atmoshere and VERY cheap.

The rent was so cheap, was a guy paying £42 a week were my brother pays £86 in Bristol. Bath is very expensive in comparsion. The acomadation was very nice also (about on par with Baths, just half the price). I know its cheaper because its up north and Baths is a very expensive place to live but still a plus.

The night light would be amazing at sheffield as all people say it is and you can just tell by the amount of bars a clubs there. i also live that fact that being a city uni you are in the centre when going to lectures.

One of the students doing a PHD there had a SV650s (like me!!), nothing to do with what uni i want but was cool!! I think in later years would be ok to take the bike and also the Cat and Fiddle is so close and ALWAYS want to ride that, and if i was there could master it!!!!

I think sheffield, although being a big city (like 5th in the country) its good so much greenary it doesnt feel like a concrete jungle (eg London). loads of parks and had such an atmosphere when i went in the summer (was rain when i went recently so noone out in the parks!!)

Also, out of them all there was so many attractive ladies there Razz was very impressed and when i went on my first visit got talking to the fittest girl who was planning to stucture degree Cool

=> well, on par maybe with Bath, so nice in simular ways and could see myself there

Well, that the unis and now i cant decide, all gave the same offers which doesnt help as if i put one as first choice VERY unlikly to go to second choice.

I think at the moment its between Bath and Sheffield but cant decide at all. Anyone tell me more about these cities as a place or the unis and your experiences???
**Sorry for such a long thread but help is greatly needed!!**

Chances are your bike would get nicked in Notts anyway. Exclamation

The town has seriously gone downhill in the last 10 years and is not a nice place with regards crime. The Uni isn't is in the best area, neither are most of the student digs. If it was my choice, I'd go for Bath, based purely on the town as a whole. It's a lovely place and far more chilled than Sheffield.

It depends on what you like though, I quite like sleepy, traditional but funky towns, and Sheffield doesn't cut it for me. At the end of the day, you only spend a few hours a day at the uni anyway, and 3-4 years is a long while to stay in a town you don't like.

I went to Hatfield, which is a void of town. It can make life difficult when you move off campus for the 2nd/3rd years. Looking at house after house with boarded up windows covered in graffiti isn't great fun. St. Albans was nice though, and only a mile or two down the road Thumbs Up

Personally I think asking someone on the internet to decide which uni I should go to, decide your future is quite retarded but hey that's just me, we can't all have common sense.

He's asking for advice on what the towns are like as a whole. Nowt wrong with getting people opinions who actually might know the places.

I'm in my second year at Bath, my friend is in the second year of chemical engineering.

All I can say is, go to Bath! It's a lovely place, a really nice city, nothing in Bath is really newer than the 1900's, the town isn't any newer than the 1700/1800's, with the Roman baths in the middle of the town obviously dating from the year dot. All of this makes it look good. The best thing about Bath Uni is that you live on campus in your first year, they are literally a 2 minute walk away from your lectures. A lot of other unis scatter you all over the city.

Bath, definately! Thumbs Up

Any questions about Bath uni then PM me.

unless i was to split myself into 5 pieces or spend the next 5 months in the 4 citys i wont know what there like. im going to decide but since i have spoken to Titz and Impaler, both of which go to 2 of the unis in question i wanted to know the citys are like from like minded poeple.

Ive been asking my techers, friends anyone to help me as more information the easier the decision for me Thumbs Up

The opening title was to set the scene of the thread. If you dont want to help my find out more information about the citys/unis in question please dont post. Thank you Thumbs Up

My 2p..

I looked at Loughborough, turned out I wouldn't get the grades. The uni is nice, good reputation, the people all seem very elitist though. They all seem very up themselves. And there's very little else other than the actual campus. Although that little nightclub is nice.

Bath uni, don't know anything about the actual uni, but Bristol nightlife rocks! And there's an RAF uni air squadron for Bath uni too.

Yea i think you could be right, i wish i had more time (can take time out of college as so much work) to visit Bath 1 more time. I like how it isnt a massive City but then again like sheffield.

Ive got to make my choices soon if i want to get the accomdation i choice so time isnt on my side, then again i think any of them would be good enough for a good time.

Argh i dont know!!

Visit Bath again! Take one of the sight seeing tour buses from the town - that'll make your mind up!

I went to Sheffield. Would certainly recommend it.

Top university, member of the Russell group - gets a lot of research money.

Big city, but lots of greenery if you like that sort of thing. Long way to the beach though. Peak district around the corner. Two city universities, so lots of students, but as the population is over half a million, and with 4 surrounding large towns with over another million between them, it's far from swamped by students. Great nightlife.

Can't comment on your course as mine was completey different.

even Brought a Micron Paddock stand from Hein Gerike...had to take it back on the train Shocked wasnt a great idea!

might be bit Brighter aswell so lots of poeple out.

I wish this wasnt so hard!!

Sheffield - I don't know about the University I'm sorry but I was born there and do visit alot so I am in the know when it comes to what there is and the things to do.

First of all, accommodation probably won't be a problem, there are hundreds of houses in the surrounding area which offer cheap accomodation for lodgers such as yourself, it's a quick way for people with a spare room to make money really. So I wouldn't worry too much about that, plus I suppose seen as I live there I might be able to sort you out a place for a few days or something. And there is a few BCFers who probably would too.

The nightlife isn't too bad either, I've been out there and it's sometimes quite downtown, and there are lots of pubs and clubs for you to do student type things in, and also there is Meadowhall where you can go shopping or have a night out there too, and if you are such inclined there's Ice Sheffield too, where you can obviously go Ice Skating. Also a massive, and I mean massive swimming baths called Ponds Forge, where you can, well you know, swim and stuff Laughing It's quite close to the University as far as I know. Oh and the Ski Village if you like that sorta thing, though looking out the window you could use my street Razz

There are a few BCFers, like I said before who you could go for rideouts with, if you are going to be taking the SV650, and you could even go to Squires. I'm not sure about Bath and what is around there seen as I've never been but if you choose Sheffield you have the whole of Yorkshire at your disposal, and some of the roads are amazing. I mean Sheffield is like an hours ride from most places. There are also a huge amount of bike shops - Heine Gericke about 60 times and if you go to Rotherham I think it is you could visit J&S, it's huge.

If it was Me, I would choose Sheffield but I am of course biased because I was born there and I love it. Let me know what you choose. Thumbs Up

I would choose whatever University is best for the chosen engineering course. I believe the times or independent run a top 100 Universities each year and it should come up soon, perhaps google for it.

Top employers look for the best of the best at the better Universities.

I'm not sure if thats what you meant by the "department" when you said one is better than the other.

This purely based on Cities but go to Bath! I live about 30 miles from Bath and it really is a magnificent city and you have some of the best roads in the South West close by, just an hour away you have some of the best beaches and weather Britain has to provide, you got some lovely scenery, Exmoor and Dartmoor about 2 hours away are just amazing.

Cheddar is just a stones fro away and you really will never forget visiting the South West of England.

/me waits for money from "visit somerset" people. Laughing

I'm going to Coventry Uni in Sept, not a great city but a nice campus.

I ment the deptment that does the course so the course. and this is probably Loughborough, but i cant see myself there TBH and would rather have fun and have a slightly less valible degree, the job prospects with chemical engineering are good so i dont think its vital.

You're very sensible in rating your choices in terms of how much you like the city and the course.

If you don't enjoy your course, then you will never enjoy your time at university no matter how great the city is.

If it was down to me personally, out of all the unis I visited all those years ago it would be between Bath and Nottingham. I originally wanted to go to Nottingham before I had a gap year and changed my mind to Cardiff.

Bath is the most beautiful of cities, full of great places to go out, and only a short train ride from Bristol which is also a great place to go out.

I was in Nottingham last night (Rock City) and can confirm it's a bit of a hole. I ended up leaving my car on a main road (couldn't find the multi-story Rolling Eyes ) and was terrified it (and the £250 GPS system I had borrowed) was going to be gone when we got back. We were lucky in my opinion, it just doesn't seem a friendly city. We did find a half-decent pub though. Laughing

Bath on the other hand, is a great city. It's about 25 or 30 miles from me, and I don't really get to go there enough, but it is a good, historical city. And not too far from the legendary Bristol nightlife.

Sheffield has an absolutely huge mall. That's all I know about it really. Laughing

Nottingham is not as bad as a lot of people seem to think, crime wise. If you lived in a student house then it would probably be a bit dodgy for keeping your bike, though.

Advantages of Nottingham:
Tons of shops in a compact city center. Loads of good pubs, and okay clubbing. Near to the peak district for good biking roads, and Matlock Bath is close enough to be a regular bike meet. Lots of students. Lots of women.

Disadvantages:
I wouldn't fancy keeping my bike outside in any of the inner-city areas (where all the student houses are). A long way from the coast.

I can't really comment on the Uni, because I haven't been. People who come from other cities to study seem to like it in general (they stay here after they've finished).

Holy god, what a threatening city. Paulodd's at uni there, and I go up to visit him every so often.

Campus does look quite nice though, especially the gym/swimming pool stuff.

So hard to find /anything/ though.

Then again alot of people consider Bangor to be a farm... Thinking

My sister thought of coming here, but got told it was dead and had about 3 pubs (as i did aswell).

I get here and theres something like 40 pubs and 5 clubs.

None too shabby in my opinion.

Oh and your right, nottingham is a scummy scummy town. My sister went to uni there and now lives in a place we term as 'little beirut'.
Seriously its like wandering round northern ireland mid 80s, but all VERY asian.

What i would also look at, is halls. When i applied to uni, i always thought i wouldnt get the points for Soton. And soton could only guarantee you a room if it was your firm. Bangor however said all first years were guaranteed a room so i put that as insurance.
