er5 clunky gears in 1st and second

before i bought my er5 i read about a horrible clunk when going in 1st and then up to 2nd.... my bike does excactly this......does anyone know why and is there a way of making it stop!!!

Yeah my CBF500 does this. AFAIK it's an inherent thing with Honda twins. There's no reason why similar bikes wouldn't suffer as well. I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Try giving it a few more revs/speed before changing, this often reduces the clunkiness (and no, not simply because the engine's making more noise).

try adjusting your chain a loose chain has the effect you are describing.

Make sure your chain isn't too tight or too loose, make sure the clutch is in the correct adjustment and make sure you haven't too little or too much engine oil.

Change the oil.

I had on my KLE500 (same setup as the ER5) in 1st,2nd & 3rd but after an oil change it made a marked improvement, only really 1st when cold.

i do need a new chain as it has a couple of tight links that i have freed off.....but the clunk to 1st happens without the chain moving......regarding the oil i changed it about 3 weeks ago...

it only happens in 1st then to second and i read online on some er5 reviews that there is a horrible clunk for 1st and 2nd on the er5 ...just hoping an er5 owner has tried to solve it or maybe you have an er5 which dosent have this problem meaning it is fixable...

I find when I've had choke out it does that the big clunk and I sort of know when its going to do it.

Also be careful on you gear changes down from 2nd to 1st, my previous bike was more foregiving.

I think i've just got used to how it is and accepted it.

Accept it, ER-5 engines have notoriously clunky gearboxes, its just inherent and nothing to worry about!

It,s to do with the mech that stops you selecting 2nd gear when stopped.It is possable to strip gearbox 'chuck it away but it.s not worth bothering. My ER5 @ZZR are both the same.

today before leaving work i revved the engine to about 3k from stopped in neutral and put it in 1st......got the biggest clunk ive had yet.......BUT after this ...the bike dropped into 1st sweet as a nut....i rode home about 2 miles then tried it again and it went from neutral to 1st sweet as about 6 times..........wondering if there is some slight misalignment that works loose and ive realignes somet in the box or not...very strange...just have to see what its like tomoz........
