Cleaning my bike last night with Autoglm Motorcycle Cleaner, Pledge, and Autosol, and realised that 90% of the cleaning involves removing chain gank, the rest of it is a piece of piss.

What does everyone use to remove this stuff? It's shitted 2 really expensive cloths I have.

Also, what do you use for finishing off the bike? I always end up with a crappy finish on the painted metal parts like on some of the running gear, headstock, etc.

Parrafin to de-gunk, though I've recently used Cillit Bang Green for general metal degreasing - works pretty well.

Finishing? Usually Mr. Sheene, or a Meguairs Stage 3 Wax for painted panels.

This is where you're going wrong then. Don't use expensive cloths, use rags. And by rags I mean old clothes/bedsheets/towels that you would have otherwise thrown away.

I don't really keep any rags Sad

I spent ages cleaning my bike last night, and ended up covering all my cloths in goo, dammit.

Also totally wasted a brush trying to get gunk off of the swingarm.

Thanks for the replies, seems like Jack Cheese is having similar problems with "Holts Chain Lube".

It's fucking dire stuff.

Thats exactly what I was going to reply with.
Sometimes its easier to spray the kitchen roll with the WD40 then wipe up rather than spraying on the bike.
WD40 on the wheels brings them up like new.

Holts Chain Lube? The sticky, slimy green one?

Used it last year, to begin with I thought I'd picked up the wrong tin and got some sort of party trick spray, silly string or something. Hate the stuff with a passion. Had to re-lube quickly last week to take it for the MOT, and Holts was the only one I could find in the flat. Was livid that I had to slime up the chain again. I'm still angry now.

I presumed he was meaning chain fling rather than lovingly polishing the chain itself with his 2 really expensive cloths.

If we're talking chain itself, I use old oil, a toothbrush and kitchen towel.

WD40 seems to get it off though Thumbs Up

For cleaning the chain itself, I use white spirit and a Tesco value paint brush. For the fling off, I just jet wash about once a week; shampoo and rinse. I was using Wurth dry chain lube (great stuff - it doesn't have any fling off at all), but my chain tends to dry up on long trips. I am now increasingly using moly grease lightly smeared on the chain. It doesn't fling off, melts and enters all the spaces between links and keeps the chain lubed for weeks.
