Got the opportunity in August to be free of the ankle biters for a week, so I suggested to the better half we jump on the bike and dive over to Dublin on the Ferry or the Lakes or wherever takes her fancy.

But she's not having it unless we take the car and go in a hotel F.F.S.!! we're going on Hols in september this is supposed to be a cheap and cheerful xtra hence the bike as the ferry is dirt cheap !!

Her argument is there's not enough room for clothes and she won't go in a tent either.....she's turned into an old fart overnight and lost all sense of adventure. At this rate I might just tell her to enjoy her break from the kids and stop at work or F'k off on me Jack Jones !!

Geese sometimes I wonder why I f'king bother.

[/rant off]

Anyway, how do you fellas get your other halfs to give in to a life as a touring pillion and where do they keep all their shoes????

I guess I'm lucky, mine is still at the stage where she likes backpacking, so the bike is a step up in luxury.

The other option is to join a club (ok that sounded a little rubbish), meet some like minded people and travel with them. Of course then you have to talk her into letting you out on your own...good luck.

I don't think I could give up my bike hols, I would have go on my own and go on holiday with her at another time.

All the best.

thin end of the wedge

this may result in
"You're not going off on that bike again are you ?"
"You love that bike more than me."
"Why do you even need a bike anyway why cant you just have a car like a normal person ?"
"If you sold that bike we could get a new kitchen."

hopefully this wont happen to you as it is the beginning of the end

She's a woman so ask her again in a week or so, she will probably have changed her mind by then. Make sure it's a sunny day that would be good on the bike when you do.

Suggest a compromise such as go on the bike but stay in B&Bs. That way it will make her feel you are making an effort to look after her comfort and she is being unreasonable in not meeting you halfway. Wink

Thumbs Up agree with that.
A couple I know regularly go on trips on the bike. Take all the camping stuff. However, depending on the weather/numb bum/apathy they'll stop off at B&Bs or the occasional hotel (as a treat). Don't book beforehand, just knock on a few doors. I know in Scotland the local tourist info offices keep a list and will 'phone around and book one for you.

Best of luck with your trip.

HTH Thumbs Up

My Mrs is now doing the same over the Spain trip.

"I'm not camping!"

"Can we not just get there in a day and have a longer holiday?"

"Can we not just fly?"

Yes love, what a fucking great bike trip that would be!

Why are women just so lacking in any sence of adventure? I asked her if she was excited by the trip and she just said that she was looking forward to going to Spain. Rolling Eyes

So you're not on your own mate, just do as I'm doing. Plan a trip TELL her you're going and invite her along if she wants do. I bet you she does!

Let her nag, but just start whilsting when she does. Probably not the best plan for the longevity of a relationship, but the only way I'll ever get to do this trip. Wink

Remind her that it's the journey that's important, not the destination.

Ok, don't go too philosophical. Suggest you point out that there are better things to experience than airport departure lounges and being stuck in a pressurised tube. A journey through a different country where you can see and experience the sights, stop when you feel like it and use the time to relax is an alternative. That's assuming you don't intend blasting all the way on the autoroute (just do that for the boring bits - like away from the ports) Wink

Believe me, I have tried everything.

She knows just how special the trip will be, and is well aware of the fact that it would be MANY years before we could do it again, but she is simply not willing to experience ANY discomfort of any sort for any price.

The bike isn't comfy enough, (KLE500?), tent's are cold, hotels will be cheap and nasty, won't have enough time in Spain etc, etc.

We have done her shitty boring summer beach holidays for years, and I just want one holiday that I might enjoy. Just one!

MikeH. If you find a definitive solution, PM me FFS!

Something I have done in the past is to meet her there. You leave a couple days early by bike, she flies there. I know this means you need more holiday, but it could prove worthwhile. Then you can make her jealous with all your photos and stories. Plus you will still have the bike to enjoy whereever you end up.

Probably for the best to be honest. You'll be able to clock up far higher mileages on your own, and won't have someone to argue with when you get lost (and you will get lost, I can assure you). And when you hit the twisty mountain roads, you will be really glad not having a load of extra weight on the back Thumbs Up

Yeah to be honest I have on a few occasions managed to get a girlfriend to go out for the evening to some place she didnt really want to go, and she moaned so much that i regretted bringing her.

It wd be ten times worse if you had a women staying in a tent who wanted to be in a hotel.

Sorted, I'll come with you then Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I came back in tonight and I commented to she who must be obeyed that I need to get something cooler to wear as my textile trousers were way too hot today(Betty Swollocks), she commented that it better be warm when we go to Dublin ???????

Do I sense a thaw ?????

Fingers crossed, I've also been to look at an Africa Twin this aft, could be just to thing to swing it in the comfort stakes Wink The guy has offered £900 for the KLE against a £3K AT although it seems a lot of money for an R plate even though it is tidy with less than 20K on the clock.

I admire your optimism. I suspect that what she said was very similar to "It better not be cold when we go to Dublin." ie if it is cold, it will be your fault

it could be it will all go well and you will have a lovely time tho

Mike, I utterly sympathise!

I told her that I will still be going, but as we won't be together, I may do a shorter trip so she isn't alone so long.

I then suggested Scotland, to which she said, "Oh can I come?"

Shocked Make your flaming mind up woman!

So I'm just going to make plans on the quiet, and COMPLETELY disregard every word she says about the trip. The only answer I will accept from her is the one she gives me the morning I set off.

Pain in the arse.

As someone who hates riding pillion my sympathy is with the women! Mile upon mile of uncomfortable islolated drudgery. Trying to make someone do something they don't want to is always a disaster.
The solution....have separate holidays or buy her a bike. Bikes are better without pillions!
