... good to mix? Just been diagnosed with tonsilitis, so i'm on the erythromycin. My personal view is that copious quantities of vodka will help kill the bacteria in my throat.

Anyone know if it's ok to mix?

Jack

I used to get tonsilitis once every three months or so, and always got given erythromycin for it. Have had several sessions during the bit when you feel ok, but still have three days of tablets left. No problem whatsoever. If anything, I was disappointed that I was just drunk, and no more so than normal.

Getting hammered on two pints after giving blood is a much better plan.

I had the worst form of tonsillitis before, I forget the name, pretty long one as I recall.

I ran straight into a chain that was shin height running out of a Weatherspoons pub, I ran into it full speed and fell pretty bad. I had 4 pints of Stella, felt weird, good but can make you look like a tit.

Oh and by the way, the antibiotics are pretty crap if you have a severe case of it, I was taking pain killers, using mouthwash as well and trying to drink water to hydrate myself. In the end it got so bad, drinking water was painful so I went to the A&E, the nurse was really nice and gave me some soluble tablets that you cant have prescribed.

I used them for a few days and I noticed the effects straight away.

Go and get them….

I asked about this when I was last put on antibiotics by my doctor.

Apparently, there is only one antibiotic which is affected by alcohol. Alcohol stops that form of antibotic from working, hence the reason not to drink.

However, they tell you not to take alcohol with all antibiotics so that you don't get drunk and forget to take them, and don't throw them all up again.
Also, being seriously hungover affects your immune system, and doesn't help your body recover from whatever you've been diagnosed with.

If you want a drink, help yourself. Just don't get rat-arsed. Thumbs Up

Some drugs massivly multiply the effects of alcohol.

My mate a bit back was on them for ACNE and drank a pint & was fooked. & I mean fooked, as in paralytic.

just take it , very , very slow for the first hour and see how you feel.
Then drink like a fish if you are still standing.

Some basic pharmacology. All antibiotics are not the same.

Alcohol is broken down in your liver by an enzyme called Mixed Function Oxidase (MFO). This works at a fixed rate. Some antibiotics are also broken down by MFO. So, if you drink when your MFO is all busy breaking down the antibiotic, it can't deal with the alcohol at the same time. You get pissed more quickly.

The antibiotic is also broken down more slowly which could lead to an overdose (although in reality most of the antibiotics which are affected by this are pretty safe even in massive doses). Cephalosporins are a good example of this. You can drink with them, but you will get pissed really quickly.

There is one that you really mustn't drink at all with, in fact you can't (well you can, but not for long). This is Metronidazole (often used in the treatment of tooth root abcesses and for some tropical diseases). If you drink even a small amount with metronidazole, you will be violently and repeatedly sick. This is a direct action on your vomiting centre.

Metronidazole is also used in the treatment of alcoholics to keep them 'on the wagon', if they go off for a sly drink after taking it, they will regret doing so.

Erythromicin can cause gastric irritation; so can alcohol. Not a good combination.

Also it is very important to complete your term of antibiotics.

Without going into details (i cant be fucked), you will end up reinfecting yourself with a harder to shift infection.

So ALWAYS complete the full term.
