I've been having a wee problem lately, and have run out of ideas. This normally happens in 3rd and 6th gear (only), around 6tho with the throttle opening to accelerate. Instead of the revs powering up, what happens is as if i had the clutch pulled half in - there's still acceleration but the revs go mental. Kinda like a racing start - the revs are up there (i have had to be careful of redlining at this stage) and the bike accelerates. As if i were dipping the clutch or something. But all this happens with a simple opening of the throttle, no clutch involved. Could this be a clutch wiring problem, or something more serious?

The Bike is a......? Rolling Eyes

If you have a bike with gears and a wet clutch - Sound like clutch wear. Adjust the cable, if that don't work chances aer it's completely worn. Answer - Replace the worn out clutch. Smile

Apologies - it's an RVF400. Had it since september. This only happens now and then, normally when I'm carrying someone. If it does sound like wear, clutches are pricey to replace, no? Im buggered if it is...

Not if you do it yourself. Smile About £50 for plates, springs and cover gasket. But may as well do an oil change while you're at it.

Try adjusting the cable first.

It'll get steadily worse, but it won't cause any damage to anything else in the engine. You can make it last by being gentle on the clutch when pulling away and avoiding opening the throttle sharply when there's a lot of load on the engine, such as pillion or up a hill.
