Hi,

I don't have a manual for my CG125 (A service one anyway, I have a Haynes) and I was wondering when the next service is due? It's a 2001 CG125 Y Plate (2 drum brakes, no electric start, new shape, the discs came in 2002) and it has done 5000 miles.

Now this bike is obviously 4 years old, it's just a very low mileage model... Do I still need to take it to a dealers to service? Anyone with the manual that can tell me the next service interval?

Thanks,

Toby

FWIW I thought the Haynes manual had the service intervals and the work required at each. Somewhere towards the front from what I recall.

It's not even run in! Surprised You could probably change the oil in 20000mile's time and it would still be fine and if you are that cheap you could probably get away with sunflower oil although I do not recommend this Wink

you could probably even get away with no oil! Laughing
run in time is 500 miles up to 5000rpm(35mph) then another 500 miles at 7000rpm(50mph). then rev to hearts delight...
i think 5000 miles is enough to run the bike in..,, Rolling Eyes Laughing

All modern bikes generally have the same service interval. Minor at 4000, major at 8000. There are differences between models, obviously, but generally speaking, stick with 4k/8k and you shouldn't go too wrong, especially with the CG.

Edit: Took you long enough to reply didn't it, Toby?

Bumpage...

So what's the major service I should be having at 8,000 miles, and how much is it going to cost me?!

Thanks,

Toby

Hi Toby,

Your manual should tell you - you should read the section at the front (the 78-2000 bit) in conjunction with any supplements at the back on your model. Unless the supplement tells you to do otherwise, you need to do what it says at the front.

Which isn't very much, if my memory serves me! Probably about an hours work if you don't need to replace any wearing components (brake shoes, chain etc.). Tappet adjustment probably the most onerous thing to do, and even that's not hard.

finpos.

Thanks finpos.

What tools will I need to adjust tappets? Hopefully I can use the ones I've got (Sockets 8mm-19mm 12 point, Spanners 8mm-19mm + 24mm, Feeler Gauges, Plug Wrench, Screwdrivesr)

Sounds like you have enough gear right there. Only thing to watch is you might need a smaller spanner for the lock nut on the tappet adjusters, but I really could not be certain.

CG125 - change the oil every 1500 miles, clean the air filter at the same time. Check the valve clearances every time they start to get a bit too noisy. Laughing

Check, adjust and lubricate the chain every week, check and re-inflate the tyre pressures similarly, or every time the tyres start to feel a bit slippery.

There isn't really much else to it, other than the occasional cleaning out and sanding the shoes in the drum brakes.

Grease the wheel spindles every time you have the wheels off, oil the control cables every month or so, check for rust on the frame and attack it with a wire brush and some Hammerite if you find any, check for tightness of bolts etc every so often. Autosol or similar on the exhaust every time it bothers you is a good idea too.

I've got a slightly different model CG to yours (disc brake on the front), but the service intervals should be similar enough. In the owners hand book it mentions a service at 600m and 2500m, then the next one is 5000m and finally 7500m.

For the 5000m one it recommend that you:
Inspect and clean, adjust, lubricate or replace if necessary:
Fuel Line, Throttle Operation, Valve Clearance, Engine Idle speed,Drive Chain, Brake Fluid, Brake Shoes/Pads, Brake System, Brake Light Switch, Headlight Aim, Clutch System, Suspension, Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Wheels/Tyres.

Clean:
Fuel Strainer Screen and Air Cleaner

Replace:
Spark Plug and Engine Oil
