12,000km is coming up, and my bike has been more neglected than i anticipated. I removed the standard plug to find it black and oily, chunks of insulator missing, sooty deposits and a worn electrode. Oh, and it was the wrong plug.
There's a few things i need to do including the following;
replace gearbox oil
replace air filter
replace fuel filter
new C&S
replace brake pads
check brake fluid + top up if necessary
Is there any practical advice i might need to help me through it? The brake fluid and tranny oil top-ups are worrying me because i have no idea what hydraulic fluid and oil to use.
The C&S has me stumped, too. I've got a paddock stand, so the rear wheel should come out in a jiffy, but how do i split the link on the old chain to get it off? And how do i assemble the new chain?
I'm too much of a chicken to do the fork seals, so it's going in for them. £70 for fitting only sounds steep, though.

You need to buy a manual.
The type of brake fluid to use should be written on the filler cap. I bet you look at it every time you are on the bike.

Cause and effect?

If it is an endless chain (no split link) you will need either a chain splitting tool, an angle grinder or drop the swingarm out. To put the new one on, either use the split link or you will need the use of a chain rivetting tool to fit the pressd-on link. I personally wouldn't use a split link on anything bigger than a 250cc bike. You can fit it using the split link then take it to a garage to get them to fit the rivet link if you want.
Now go get that manual, download or buy. I recommend buy because it is difficult to put your computer next to the bike for quick reference and you would get the keys all oily. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Cagiva planet 125. I got the brake pads done - the old ones were caked in a brake dust/fork oil mush which rendered my fropnt brakes useless. Cleaned a LOT of grit from around the pistons, too.
I'm also trying to derestrict it, but i have no bloody idea where the main jet it located on my carb!

The main jet is inside the float bowl, you have to take it off to get at it.
Assuming you didn't know this, PLEASE leave it alone until you at a minimum have a workshop manual in front of you. The carb is a precision piece of engineering and should only be messed with if you know what you are trying to achieve by dismantling it.
You could inadvertantly move or damage something you shouldn't then we will get another 'My bike won't start' thread. Like someone a couple of months ago whose 'mate' fiddled with his carb and put the throttle slider back in the wrong way round, then wondered why it redlined as soon as it was started. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. if it's a dell orto carb, should it be roughly the same kind of shape as that on my scooter(also dell orto)? If they look the same shape, i'll guess it's a fair assumption the float bowls look similar. I'll have a look, and if i'm fairly certain i may try and replace the jet. Failing that, i'll have a trip to mmc.
