Hi everyone after I went on a very long ride yesterday about 240 miles I noticed that on the way home my oil level light was something coming on and then going off.

Now sure you would just think well top it up then but the same thing has happened 2 weeks ago and sure enough the oil was low.

Now I can't find any leaks on the bike so I'm wondering what else would cause the bike to use more oil than normal.

By the way its a 1990 Yamaha FZR600 Genesis (the one without the spin on oil filter if that helps). It has also done about 19000 miles as well.

It could be the oil pressure switch is on its way... or it is indeed useing up oil.. the oil light is a presure indicator not level (afaik anyways) so i'd have thought it would have to be quite low to be showing low presseure Shocked

Oil might be getting past the piston rings/ somewhere and comeing out the exhaust.. i'd defenately try a compression test, or take it to a garrage and get one done. If it was comeing out the caseing or breather pipe you'd see it, that the only other way out...

Good luck, tbh i'd not be rideing it till i at least knew the cause Sad (do a search here for oil starvation to see why Shocked )

Hi

Most bikes they are a pressure switch, but Yamaha use level switches instead most (maybe all) the time.

My FZR600 does use a reasonable amount of oil. Seems to be a feature of early 90s Yamahas. How much oil is it using?

All the best

Keith

Well I topped it up before and had to put about 500ml in Shocked Which is quite a bit I think.

Is it possible that I've not had the valve clearance checked at its recommend time which I think is 16000 miles and I'm on about 19000 miles at the moment.

Thanks for the help so far.

Hi

Probably is a bit much, but they do use a load as I said. Valve clearances alone are not going to make much difference (yes it might affect the valve guides and valve stem oil seals eventually, but likely to burn out a valve long before you have to worry about those).

Think Yamahas started burning oil when they moved over to slipper pistons, so my guess would be that the issue is pistons and / or rings.

To be honest I would just live with it. Although if you are using a 0w40 or 5w40 oil I would switch to a 10w40 and also clean out the crankcase breather.

All the best

Keith
