After my little blast on marjays buell a couple of days ago, I can see why people like harleys. The engine in that buell was an absolute bastard, and I loved it.

So I'm looking at old harleys on ebay. Bear in mind I'm really not bothered about handling or reliability here. I'm getting tempted by an old XL1000 or similar, because they have a reputation of being utter shite in a loveable way.

So has anyone owned one, or at least ridden one. Do they vibrate in a way that makes you ache, do they lag when you open the throttle, deliver a big surge of torque, then lock up the back wheel when you close the throttle?

Are they rewarding to ride?

But buels aren't harleys, only the engine (which i suspect has been tinkered with a fair bit too)..

If its not a main transport and only for tarting then i can see the appeal.. they do hold their value well so when you decide you hate it you can flog it on Wink

Rode one, was a sportster they vibrate but not to the point that makes you ache, If you want it for long miles there perfect. I have been told they burn abit of oil mind.

This bike was a '95 1200 and had the straight through pipes and they're pretty loud ear plugs a must lol. The throttle works Mr. Green and there pretty damn tourqy.

I dont like them for the image but I would own one for big miles any day. And they do go round corners.

Our neighbour behind us has one of these:

And that is truely a nice bike when you look at it.

And not to sound a retard but what do you mean by rewarding?

Robby, If I were into cruisers, I'd buy a HD 1200 Sportster sport.

But thats a more refined harley, and I want an absolute cunt of a bike.

Also, if I were to buy a 1200 sportster sport, you might suddenly find your buell feeling a little slower, and the engine looking slightly different.

Well look no further than an iron-engined, Russian made 650 flat twin.

They rattle, misfire and vibrate their way up to around 65mph. The gearbox would be well suited in a 1920's tractor and the brakes are truly appaling. They require constant (but simple) maintainance weigh a ton and handle like an oil tanker.

In short, everything an old harley does at a fraction of the cost.

Do not confuse it with the newer, alloy engined, 750cc model. These have round bearings, disc brakes, 12v electrics and an adequate oiling system, nowhere near as much of a cunt.

I've ridden a 1200 sportster sport and a 1450 heritage softtail.

the sportster was a horrible machine. Vibey almost to the point of being painful. Brakes are horrendous, handling equally so. Surprisingly quick though - as they are slow revving a couple of extra revs leads to more speed than you would think.

The Heritage was much better. Comfier, far less vibey, nicer motor, better brakes and enough bulk to justify the dodgy handling.
