Hi one and all. i own a kawasaki zxr 750 and i am having a few problems with her.

First is sometimes she will start fine but other times i have to bump start her. when i puch the strat button i get a "tick tick" noise comes from around under the seat area.

the other problem is that my battery sometimes charges and other times it will not charge at all.

if anyone could point me in the direction of where to start i would be very greatful

im no expert but maybe a problem with the charging system like the rectifier

you could put the battery on charge each night to keep it topped up until you get the rectifier fixed

might be something else though

This was happening to my 91 ZXR, the bike would only hols a charge for a short time then need to be jumped all the time.

It turned out that the altenator was shagged.

The mechanic thought that he may just need to replace the rec / reg (cost about £30) but it appeared to be almost permenantly mounted to the actual altenator Thinking

I sourced a second hand altenator from ebay for £45 inc P&P Thumbs Up The actual lot was for the whole engine, but after a quick email, he removed it for a seperate sale Razz

The garage only charged £60 to complete the job.

These parts are getting harder to find. One salvage place in Bristol wanted £92 for an altenator and a brand new one around the £500 mark Shocked

Hope this helps

Probably not - the starter relay clicks because it's not getting enough volts (sort of)

When you thumb the button the relay pulls in and away you go. If the battery is low, then the relay pulls in and all the juice flows to the starter motor, and this causes the relay to drop out again. The volts then pick up and (assuming you're still thumbing the button) the relay pulls in again. The volts drop and the relay drops out etc. etc. etc.

Look at your battery first - are the connections clean and tight? A good battery won't start your engine with poor connections, nor will the alternator re-charge it.

If the battery is good put a voltmeter (set on the 20 volt DC scale) across it's terminals - you should get around 14.5 volts when revving the engine to around 5000 rpm. If not, then it's time to start looking at your charging system.

Always start with the cheapest fix first Wink

I had an earlier zxr750, the '89 H1 model. When my battery was shagged I heard the very same 'click-click' that you describe, which as said previously, was the starter relay. It turns out that zxr's are particularly fussy about how many volts are required to turn over the engine. One or two volts down and she didn't want to know. Get your battery checked out - maybe it's had it.

Kelvin - Good choice of bike mate, plus, going from your location on the map in your profile, your quite close to me?! (St Albans)?

If your still stuck mate, I dont mind popping over and taking a peek, two heads better than one so they say!

I've had a couple of L model ZXR's and now got an M2.

Let me know.

Thumbs Up

Maplins do one for under a fiver. In fact they sometimes have a 'two for the price of one' offer. I keep one under the seat and I've used it three times on the road up to now Thumbs Up

Kelvin,

It could be a couple of things.

First, when you hit the starter and it just clicks, have a look at the neutral and oil lights on the dash, do they dim and almost go out, then back to full brightness when you release the starter?

If so, then its a bad earth, either on the battery or the frame.

The other thing is, it could be the starter relay, thats the clicking under the seat, replace the relay and see if it fixes it.

Thumbs Up

Hey, pretty sure your battery is nakered mate. The ticking sound is the starter relay not getting enough power to keep the terminals connected so bouncing back and fourth. Although your battery may be showing a voltage, there may be no power coming from the battery. I had a battery sowing a good 12v yet it did nothing, not even light a bulb, so I measured the amps and there were none at all. If your battery is fairly new and it is damaged check your regulator/rectifier to make sure you don't kill your new battery.
hope this helps, Dan Thumbs Up

when the bike DONT start and just clicks the nuetral lights DO NOT dim down or go out.

the battery is about a month old i think im gonna go get it tested to make sure or can i test it on a multimeter?

gonna test the start relay as well. but would that be stopping the battery from charging?

the battery is able to light all my lights up when the bike aint running.

Thumbs Up

Ok, hook up your cars battery with jump leads to your bike if the bike starts up with no problems due to the power of the other battery then your battery needs replacing. It could be that you have a faulty regulator/ rectifier that has overcharged the battery and damaged the cells, or you could just have bought a dodgy battery or not charged it at the correct rate the first time it was used.
Hope this helps Dan Thumbs Up

Thanks
