PostPosted: 15:11 - 11 May 2006    Post subject: Fuel Consumption Reply with quote

So I ran out of petrol today. First time since I've had the bike, so I wasn't sure quite how far I'd go on a tank. Turns out it's 160km (100 miles) or so. Now, it cost me £15 to fill up, so my tank's about 3 gallons. This makes it 33mpg. Most of this riding has been done getting to work, so city commuting, sitting at traffic lights and stuff.

Now a couple of people at work have told me that's terrible, their car can do that etc etc. So what I want to know is:

Is this "normal" for a Bandit 600? Or should I be able to do more?
Has my fuel consumption been altered because it's restricted?
How can I improve my fuel consumption?

Thanks for any help.

Derestrict it Very Happy I hear that it doesn't help being restricted

Most sports bikes, the fuel consumption is not good. My last bike the gsxr 600 gave around 37mpg..which is what the books quote, though your bike, you should get about 45mpg.

Just one of the reasons why I changed my bike to a Buell XB12R which has a lot of torque, but the engine revs are half that of my gsxr. I get about 10mpg more than my last bike and the engine size is twice as big! Thumbs Up (Also it suits my ridding style, and for me it is more exciting to ride...when I want to) Very Happy

I get about 35.47 mpg on a 98 Blade, it may be comparable to a 2 litre Mondeo but I know which gives better performance Mr. Green

I'm not sure I want to know what the consumption on my ZXR400 is.
I have ran out once and vowed not to again but it does seem to be a lot of £6s I'm chucking in every time I go out on the thing!!

I get about 36 commuting. A tenner for 100 miles. It's not as good as most small cars, that's true, but I know what I prefer. My 600 is restricted ( mistake, won't be doing that again ), but they are 'falling out' next weekend. It'll be interesting to see if it does make a difference. In more ways than one... Mr. Green

I'd have thought 45-50mpg would have been the average for commuting miles on a Bandit 6. Thrashing my 400 delivered around this figure, the Blade does around 40-45 on a good day, a little bit less when hacking along, but the earliest I've needed reserve is around 145 miles.

Try and ride as conservatively as possible on the next tankful of fuel and see how far you can get. I mean ocne you can get into the next gear without labouring the engine, do it. Switch the engine off when you know the lights are going to take over 20 seconds or so.

With that sort of riding, it should see a good improvement over what you get now. If not, something is defientely wrong.

£8 to fill a tank completely, gets about 110-115 miles without reserve tank.

Hi

Much of it is probably down to where you are riding. Extreme example was my old 1.3 lhd Alfa 33 which would manage about 20mpg when used round town, cruising at 90 on the motorway it was just shy of 40mpg.

My played with 1200 Bandit manages a bit over 45mpg in general use. FZR600 nearer 50mpg. FZ750 a bit more that that.

Noticeable that when the 1200 Bandit had the gearing lowered with 1 tooth less on the front it increased fuel consumption by 10%.

All the best

Keith

My Blackbird gives me a consistant 45mpg on my commute to work, ridden at around 80-85mph, a bit less if I decide to have some fun.
The Benelli however has never given more than 35mpg, and when having fun that can drop to about 30!

Is it me, coincidence, or just random figures, but average mpg seems to have lowered over the years - or are more modern bikes more thrashable (or require more thrashing?) Confused

W T F!

I ride a restricted Bandit not that liberally and I easily get 160 miles out of my tank at about 50MPG! Confused

I think you are right. Certainly compared to 50 years ago, but probably also compared to 20 years ago.

Could be interesting to know why. Maybe because bikes are now primarily sold as toys rather than transport. Maybe people running lower gearing.

Also there are essentially 2 ways of getting power. Burn fuel more or burn the fuel more efficiently. To an extent they are mutually exclusive. These days bikes tend to rev far higher to process more fuel to make power.

All the best

Keith

Are either of you running a race can?

When my head gasket went the fuelling was well out, and reverting back to the standard jetting actually made the bike run better. It's actually running perfectly now, every time I look at the plugs they're spot on. It also stopped it drinking petrol like there was no tomorrow, so it may be an idea to have a look, it doesn't take that long (maybe because I've had the carbs off so many times).

XJR1300 does about 100 miles to reserve tatting around with plenty of fast blatts (about 30 MPG) but it will see 35-40mpg on a long steady 80-90mph motorway run.

My KLE500 used to do 35 however hard it was ridden and my mates Bandit 650 does about 45 on his 50mile commute upto Manchester each day, but then he rides pretty conservatively.

Have you thought of getting a C90 Wink

Ive never had a race can on, but could the jetting be out if the previous owner had one on??
