Ok, need some advice for a mate please...

He bought a GSX-R 600 K3 a month back now, rang around for quotes for a day and came back with Norwich Union TPFT @ approx £700, which I thought was a stunning quote for a 21 year old, 0NCB.

But the other day they ring him saying that he had given them the wrong insurance details and that he had said his DOB was 1975, making him 31!

He is adamant that he said his correct DOB 1985, and was told that they would check the recordings of his phone call, and if he did say 1985, then they would honour his quote, but if he said 1975 they would have to cancel it... fair enough.

Turns out he was correct, gave the correct details but they have now turned around and said that they are not going to honour his quote and are cancelling his insurance on the 19th of May if he doesn't cough up £1,300! Shocked

Surely they cannot do this if they firstly got it wrong, then went back on the agreement?!

He also has a claim going through that wasn't his fault and the other party has accepted full liability for, adding more hassle to the whole process!

So, where to go from here?

Straight to the top of Norwich Union?
Financial Ombudsman?

CAB for starters to see where he stands. Hope the name was taken of the one on the phone that said the quote would be honored..It will be useful when they play that tape back.

Hi,

I think they are stuck with having to honnor the quote if he has already paid some money.

Many moons ago I had a job writing the software for quotation systems and we got fined for mistakes for this very reason (up to 49% of my wages!)

I would try Tranding standards before but the CAB may well have other offers.

But first being very nice and polite write them a letter outline the details and explaing they have a contract they need to honnor.

But if the say they have cancelled the insurance - do not ride the bike until it is sorted.

Regards
C

Does he have any written evidence which states that Norwich Union would honour the quote?

No, unfortunately it was all delt with over the phone. But he recorded all the times and dates of conversations and has passed all the information onto the Financial Ombudsman who are investigating his case for him.

Will keep you updated on what happens with this one... might take a while though! Rolling Eyes

I was given a low quote of £500 for a 96 RVF400, thats with 1 recent claim so no NCB and 3 points on my licence. When I rang through with my code the insurance company said that the quote number never existed and that it was £1200 TPFT so I wangled em down to £900 and that was the lowest I could get it to on that day.

I wonder if he didn't have a claim going through whether they would have actually 'found out' that his date of birth was ten years out? It seems strange that they would the error realise at random a month later, unless they were processing/cross checking the details of the claim and noticed that difference then.

Phone them up and ask for call record evidence. Every call center these days record all calls so they can get out of any liability for accidents etc, this is also to help the operator incase of any fraud.

If your friend is correct they should honour his claim after the operator made an error.

although they will hammer him next year with the premium.

Rich.

Yeh, they did that. They heard the recording themselves and admitted that they where in the wrong, but say that they are not honouring his quote still. Mad

Well looks like the Financial Ombudsman scared Norwich Union, they are now honoring his original quote. Rolling Eyes

Reference for future though, if insurance companies try and pull a fast one!
