How would one compare to my CBR? They seem quite large and acording to websites, heavy. Im yet to sit on one but want to!

They seem to be going for £1500-1750 in fairly good condition for L1/3 models.

Is there anything to look out for/listen out for of one with 25k+ miles?

A couple of examples:

'93 L1, 33k miles £1500 private sale

'94 L2, 20k miles £1750 dealers

How would they handle compared to my bike, is performance improved/worse? Ill try and get a go on one but might as well here people opionions Smile

Also, what would insurance be like? Id hopefully be able to upgrade my current insurance (Think its with zenith though Motorcyle Direct) but would it be much more on top or a little less?

Thanks, Adam Thumbs Up Smile

I fecking love em, I've got 2 at the moment, an L (waiting for a ZX9 engine to be dropped in) and an M2 (the race version of the L), and have had 4 in total.

They are heavy(ish) compared to the latest machinery, but they are quick, have a solid front end (one of the best in the business).

Top end noise is not uncommon, so dont worry about a few little rattles you hear on tickover. And as usual, if looked after, the engines are pretty strong. Slipper clutch as standard (L model onwards) yes, even for a 12+ year old bike.

All that changed on the L1 - 4 models was graphics.

I loved mine Thumbs Up

Insurance for NCB living down the road to you in Wickford was £350 ish TPFT (no garage, no insurance approved locks, no alarms etc).

It fooking rocked when you nailed it and would feel 'meaty' when cruising. It may not handle as a new soprts bike would, and probably have the same perfomance as the Cat.

Styling rocks Cool

Parts are quite hard to get, but saying that there are shit loads on egay

Back in PB they had a section on the 750's over the ages, the ZXR was commented as having the best looks and sound. With a race can on, it sounds like a F1 car when ragging it Thumbs Up

Get one, you know you want to Laughing

How old are you, and how many NCB have you got?

The ZX7 should piss on your CBR once you have mastered the weight, but it won’t be any where near as comfortable as the CBR.
One at that mileage that has been abused will probably give you gip if it hasn’t got a FSH, but I can imagine you know what you’re looking for anyway. I’d defiantly go for the 7.
The 600RR is a good bike, why did you go for that (I ask because usually after owning a Honda you don’t go back) Wink Thumbs Up

I would hear a 'secondary' noise when riding mid range. Apart form the actual revs of the engine, there would be another, more 'droaning' noise.

Fro what I remember, this may be normal for kwaks Confused

The riding position almost crippled me at first, with your arse in the air and all the weight on your wrists, it takes a while to get used to it.

Back ache may be a problem on long journeys

I had a H2 many many moons ago and loved it. They just ooze character and sound great, they handle well and felt very quick at the time.

Indeed they will feel heavier than your CBR but they should feel more planted because of it. The riding position will be loads different too, but it won't take you long to get used to that.

Get yourself a test ride on one

Sorry, but I can't see how. Modern day 6s from the last 5 years or so have near enough the same power as the 7R (100-105rwbhp) with about 30kgs less weight. In a straight line I wouldn't have thought there'd be much in it.

600s are such great road bikes to average road users. Yes the 7R has a bit more torque/cruising ability, but it needs it. When the going gets twisty, for the same rider, the CBR should be the easier/more complient choice as it's carrying so much less weight and gives the rider the ability to use more of what it has.

Craig,

On my previous L1 I quite easily kept up with and passed a race prepared brand new R6 at Brands Hatch on a track day a couple of months ago.

A road going 12 year old 750 against a brand new race R6 Confused

Thumbs Up

I have a j1 zxr750 and i love it.

Its big and beefy, none of this little girl bikes business, good acceleration and top end is 150/160 even for a 10+ year old bike.

As has been said, it is a bit rattley at idle but this is normal.

Shocks were hard on the h and j models but are betteer on the l models.

It has one of the best front ends of any bikes out today and corners excellently.

I have raced a zx6r in a straight line and i had a slight edge over it but that is because the 6r is newer technology.

Deffinetly go for a l model though as they put everything right with these. Thumbs Up

Personally i would save the money for the 750 gixer you mentioned.
The kwaks may have been a good bike in their day, but by comparison with modern tackle they are big, slow and lardy.
Barry_MC21's comment on passing a new track R6 is all well and good, but is probably more to do with rider skill than mechanical superiority - how many times have you come across blokes on super-trick bikes that haven't the faintest clue how to ride them?
Anyway, the smart money says modern gixer pisses on the chips of the old kwak everytime.

But what if you yourself then rode the brand new R6?

recently got an L3 myself after having a gsxr600k1..

comparing wise.. definitely a step backwards but that doesn't mean to say the zxr750 isn't a good bike.. for its age i'm quite surprised it still goes so well.

mine has been downgeared one tooth at the front and will top out at an indicated 150mph so probably ~135mph in real terms.. however it still pulls very very well.. so much quicker than the 600 (or so it feels).. top gear roll-on doesn't hang about like the 600 did which is good.. especially if you're being leasurely around the twisties in 5th and 6th gear.

Riding position is killer but i don't know if that was because i hadn't been on a bike for a while.

The bike even though it's heavy is very chuckable i find, maybe it's top heavy? i dunno but it falls into corners and i got my chicken strips off on the first dry day i had on it.. get good feedback fron the front and gives you confidence for it!

Still look good, the single sided ram air looks cool as does the newer zx7r which looks hard!

i've got an akrapovic can from my 600 on it at the moment and from what i can tell on the bike it sounds very nice and throaty.

Insurance is very cheap, half the price of the 600, basically as it's an old bike.

One thing i don't like about it is you have to give the brake lever a good squeeze you soon get used to it but i'm gonna see what i can do about upgrading them for more feel.

other than that the bikes fine, no other problems as of yet apart from my hugger getting caught up on a bolt on the subframe, twisting, and melting agaainst my tyre.. could just have been the very bumpy roadas i was on and probably a tired rear shock.

Anyway short review, hope it helps, and well.. just get one Thumbs Up
