Right I have a rough idea that it takes all the hassel out of chain lubing, but is it something I can buy out the box and just fit myself??

I've got a little rust developing (superficial it seems) on the chain, the bikes only done 4.5k miles, anyway I can re-spruce it up with the above mentioned scottoiler?

Oh and final point, a badly adjusted chain causes knocking and lockups I gather, but is there any reason why it would make the engine rev a little harder than usual or is that more of a fueling issue?

I thought about getting one of those, but you have to fill it up every 500 miles. How often do you have to lube your chain - not much more often than that.

yes very simple to install when you understand what it is doing, you just need to find the vaccum take off on your bike. even if you do fit onemake sure that you keep checking the chain every so often for wear and tight spots

A bit of a rip off new, ranging from about £80 for a basic kit up to over £100 for twin injector touring ones.

But get a good 2nd hand one off ebay (make sure it has all the bits) for £30-40 and they are well worth it if you tend to be a bit lazy with chain maintenance.

I only have to refill the reservoir after about 1000 miles. You get to alter the oil flow so you don't make a mess of your swingarm nor end up with a rusty chain.

The trouble with second hand kits is they have already been set for one bike - what if you want to put it in a different place but the vacuum/delivery tubes are too short? (You could buy replacement tubes, I suppose.)

You can but the parts separately direct from Scottoiler if you know what you need. It should work out a bit cheaper than off-the-shelf as you end up with loads of small parts not needed. And I do recommend the dual injector, it's so much easier to fit and adjust.

Before you fit one though, if you do, get all the rust off the chain first and relube as you would normally. The Scottoiler takes time to lube the chain, so you could be riding on a 'dry' chain for a fair few miles.
