The soft link hot dog refers to is the one which the garage rivvets together. Though since it's an o-ring, it'll probably be endless so you probably will have had your swingarm dropped out when it was fitted.
If you get that to a metallurgist, you may be able to find the cause, if not for claiming any money, then to alert the manufacturer to a potentially dangerous fault.
If you send it direct to the manufacturer and tell them your story, chances are they will have it investigated.

I thought a garage would have been more eager to drop the swingarm so they can charge more. Seconded about the braced swingarm, though!

Soft link it is then as i saw the chain when it went on, wasnt the soft link that broke though , that i do know cos that one had writing on it and that's still whole. With an endless curiosity over how things work i watched and listened as the mechanic did the chain, not that much stayed in my head mind you, (blonde moment)
