PostPosted: 03:06 - 22 Jun 2006    Post subject: Cold Mornings ? help me please !!! Reply with quote

Im living in Australia , currently facing winter.

I ride a ZXR2C 250 Ninja. I imported it 4-5 months ago.

Rides awesome , but currently its been running really crappy
in winter ??

I'll warm up the bike, using the man choke for a little bit, until its
running smoothly. After the bikes warm and ready to go ,
choke off , and ill put it into gear , little revs to take off and the bike
will stall ???

Even with high revs in gear , releasing the clutch
the bike stops ???

Someone said that my clutch plates are sticking because of
the cold ?

Im warming the bike between 10-20 mins !!! and still i cant take off ????

Ive got plenty of fuel , oil etc and not sure what to do.

Can someone please help ?

Reuben.

Is it stalling or just cutting out?

If its cutting out check the side stand switch and the clutch lever switch are not buggered making the bike think the side stand is still down.

What oil have you in it?
We mainly use 10W40 here through all seasons and it is not a problem in cold weather even below freezing.
Wondered if in Australia you use a grade more suitable for hot Summer conditions?
If so it will be very thick when it's cold.
If the bike sorts itself out when really warm this seems likely the case - just change it, cheap solution.

Once you've warmed you bike up pull your clutch in and hold it in for about 10 seconds, then put it into gear and to try ride off and it should work.

Another simple thing to check, is your sidestand still down? You can often slip the clutch with the sidestand down so the bike starts to move, but as soon as you let the clutch all the way out the safety switch will cut the engine.

As to clutch plates sticking.... Try putting the bike in first whilst sitting on the bike. (You may have to rock the bike slightly to do this). Now release the clutch and the bike shouldn't budge. Pull the clutch in and the bike should move easily as though it were in neutral. It the plates were sticking the bike wouldn't move easily, even when the clutch lever was pulled in.

If so then ensure all sidestands, disk locks are removed Wink and once the engine is started try getting it to move forwards with you feet before slowly letting out the clutch. Hopefully this forward motion will take some of the initial load off the engine.

Has the bike got a main stand? Or if you can get access to a paddock stand you can try running the engine and going through the gears very easily with the rear wheel then held off the deck (don't rev to fast though as with no load the chain won't like it!)

Once I have warmed up the bike, if I leave the clutch in and rev to around 4000rpm, and if I ever so softly let it out, I can take off with out a problem. But its initially take 15mins to warm the bike!!!

It also does this, when I have ridden for a little bit and put the bike into neutral whilst opening the garage door, it will stall if I go to take off again?

and yes the stand is up.

Many thanks to MRX Steve and extreme3d your posts have helped me
not fix the problem but more of an understanding of what is going on.

Rolling the bike a little before I start it (extreme3d) has helped heaps.

Thanks guys.

P.s thanks GearboxGeezer what do you do to relieve the problem?

What engine speed did the bike idle at when warm?

Surely not cold enough over there to suffer from carb icing?

Nah it’s not that cold , but it idled around 1.5-2000rpm.

I upped the idle to 3000, and still did it.

If I hold the throttle at 4000, no choke and feather the clutch,
soon enough I can take off.

It never did it in summer...... Confused

When I bought (imported) the bike had to have Australian 2006 compliance , new plugs , leads etc even new tyres !

Nearly everything had to be changed for new, and my importer also
had to for compliance and registration laws.

Its in A1 condition , and only done 15,000 kms.
