Ive just bought a Ninja and its having problems starting. Electrics and charge are ok, ive checked. When trying to start her im pressing electric start button and it turns but no firing up, this goes on for approx 10-15 seconds before bursting into life with a powerful kick. sometimes it will not start for a lot longer. If the timing is out can that have this effect? otherwise, im open to suggestion.

Ps. when the bike IS running, it does seem lumpy and uneven!

Cheers
Steve

Timing won't be adjustable (at a guess)

Does it have a choke, and if so are you sure you know which way is "ON" ? Try pumping the throttle fast 4-5 times before you hit the starter, see if that does anything.

Has the bike been stood unused for any length of time?

Have you checked the state of the plugs?

Hi, The plugs look ok, the longest the bike has stood is about 7 hours. I have tried the throttle blipping a few times and it still did not fire... also (another time) i put the choke on 3/4 and it just drowned it...

Frustrating start on a ninja for me... Confused

Once it IS running though, y would it run unevenly? carbs imbalanced? Sad

Meh.

Did the bloke who sold you this bike say "the carbs just need balancing"? That's code for "this bike is completly ferked".

What you are describing sounds like a fueling/choke problem, but it could be hiding something else.

Try this:
Leave the bike several hours.
Pump throttle 4-5 times
Choke on full
Do not touch throttle
Start bike (?!Smile)
immediately reduce to half choke.

Have same bike, found the following

Don't touch choke, unless it's cold as in freezing, just floods mine and makes starting worse.

New battery unless it's new already, seems starting our bikes take a lot of power and if you bat isn't perfect it will cause problems.
I investigated this and seems the bat on these is under powered all the other zx's have much more powerful batteries.

Don't hit the starter for more than 5 seconds, it will burn the starter, 5 seconds max then leave it for 15/20 seconds.

Check you choke return, cant explain easily how to do this, if you have a manual it's in there, it's hidden away. If you haven't got a manual let me know and can scan mine or drop you a msg.
It's just if it hasn't returned the plunger fully it will cause problems.

Even after giving mine a service, new plugs, new bat, new oil, clean filters, all settings checked and re-check, it still don't fire right away is just a 1 or 2 second delay before it burst into life.
I use 1/2 throttle.

I'm putting this down to a fuel flow design issue until somebody tells me different !

If you need a contact I can tell you where you can get a new battery for £24 rather than £44.

Ian

P.s any pics of your bike ?
