some of you may remember i ordered some front disc's from the states the other week well now they have arrived....... at the ParcelForce depot. i received a letter today from them telling me this and they outlined some extra charges.

Import Duty: £9.16
VAT: £44.95
ParcelForce Clearance Fee £13.50 but what the f**k!!! the ba5tards have already been paid for delivery so why are they charging me again?
has anyone ever had this before and can you argue your way out of paying it?
I'm not at all happy about these cun7s charging me yet again for delivery. £13.50 is a full tank of optimax fuel for me and they want more money for delivery and they haven't even attempted delivery Evil or Very Mad Middle Finger

i'll argue with them tonight when i go to collect them but ultimately they can just tell me they will send it back.

You need to thank the Inland Revenue mate, not Parcel Farce. You'll probably find that they stopped it when it entered the country, so now you have to pay duty on it.

It's a bit like cash machines that charge you £1.50 to take anything out.

Sadly as your parcel is taking up shelf space, they seem to think they have a right to charge you extra... Also, they have to pay for the headed paper that your letter was printed on, the cost of posting and the time taken for someone to process said letter.

It's with most things you buy from the states, i got charged £10 for a DVD & £40 for a ipod which i got the seller to refund me it, the dvd however stated that it wouldn't cover handling fees, usually in small print.

There was a number you can phone if you have any probloms, should be on the box when you get it.

Taken from another site...
Quote:
Import charges are calculated as follows:

price paid for item = <customs value>
<customs value> X applicable duty rate = duty charged
(<customs value> + duty charged) X VAT rate = VAT charged

Did a quick look and couldn't find a duty rate for brake discs.
Closest I could find was from an EU site here which suggests 0% ? Confused

Anyhow, I think the code starts 870831, might be worth checking when you pick it up what one you've been charged. From experience shipping companies get it wrong to get money. Once ordered software which is/was zero rated and they tried to charge duty.

The fee is allegedly their costs for passing the money onto the customs people Shocked

Best of luck Thumbs Up

Is that another innocent party who's got caught up in your schnanigans Siggi?

Parcel force have already paid the VAT and whatever other tax to the inland revenue, so they're out of pocket until you pay them back. You're not 'saying a big fuck off to government', because they've already got their money.

Unless of course, you paid the VAT and just refused to pay the Parcel force charge, which I doubt.

The parcelforce fee is very hard to get around, but I think it is possible.

A couple of years I bought something from america. I forget what it is now, but they tried to charge me VAT on it as if it cost £110, when in fact it had cost me £70. It was an ebay purchase of course, so I sent customs and email explaining this and a link to the auction, and they refunded me the correct amount. They were no trouble at all to deal with, the whole process was straightforward and professional.

Parcelforce are not straightforward or professional. However, if you can persuade customs that there is no VAT/duty/ whatever its called on the item you bought and get the VAT annulled, you should be able to show that to parcelforce and get them to cancel the extra charge.

If you ever get anything sent to you from overseas, make sure it is marked on the shipping form that it is a gift, or present to you, then you will not have to pay the customs or VAT on it.

I've had things arrive from Japan, the states etc.. and always ask them to put down that its a gift. One place even wrapped it up in birthday wrapping paper! Laughing

Wink Thumbs Up

I do the same myself when buying stuff from overseas. $5-$10 to have your parcel gift raped to yourself to save £50-£100 in VAT it’s just a no brainer.

Couple of problems with some of the tax dodges. If marked as a gift, the value is important (no customs duty or VAT below £36, flat rate of 3.5% customs duty below £290 which is waived if less than £7 - plus full VAT above £36). Doesn't matter if it is marked as new or used. If you declare the value artifically low, and it gets lost or broken, the postal insurance will only pay up the declared value.

Here are the rules.

Now i've got visions of someone with a brake disc stuck on their knob.. Shocked , probably good for endurance though.. don't some martial artist hang weights from them as some sort of exercise ?
