My R6 with 14000miles on it has developed a bit of an engine noise , worse when cold, virtually non-existent when hot. doesnt alter at all when the clutch is in or out, is worse when the revs are lifted to about 1500/2000ish, doesnt sound like a tappet, maybe piston slap but again, not realy the right sound. I thought maybe timing chain or tensioner problem? it is almost like a very loud fuel pump tick?? thats the best way to describe it.
have any of you had similar problems/experiences? I aint checked the tappets for a while, about 4000miles, but were fine last time.
any advice/pointers would be good. Confused

Is the oil level OK?

Have you checked the cam chain tensioner? TBH top end rattles are likely to be the CCT on japanese four cylinder engines.

Hi, yes, oil level is fine. had new oil and filter on a couple of months ago but made no difference to the noise. Sad

Mystery ticking that goes away with temperature very often down to the exhuast gaskets starting to give up (i.e. your exhaust is blowing through a tiny hole until everything heats up and expands, closing the hole)

Exhaust header rattles due to broken/leaky/missing gaskets are usually pretty distinctive, a metallic clattery noise, can usually feel a blow too if you put your hand there, carefully. More likely to be your valves as the clearances change when your engine heats up which is why it goes away, hence you need a stone cold engine when you check the adjustment.

It's unlikely to be a camchain/tensioner problem, that would get worse when the engine gets hotter and the chain loosens up, and its once again a different sound, like a metallic clackety clack.

ive heard exhaust manifold gsk's/splits and it doesnt sound like that, but of course that doesnt mean it isnt that! i have had cam chains be noisy only when cold due to the tensioner bleeding dry when standing...but only on car engines.
