Asking here as I know a couple of people have done similar things..

I have a GT Aggressor 3.. it's in good condition and hasn't had massive amount of use, but I bent the gears and need to replace the front chainset + the rear derelieur and chain... I no longer need the bike and intend on selling it but not sure whether to buy the new parts and sell as a whole bike or to strip it and sell the parts individually?

Details:

Frame: GT Aggressor 3, 6061 Aluminium frame in silver, good condition.
Forks: RST Capa T5
Brakes: SR Suntour V-brakes

Misc bits: Gt Seat + post, short GT handlebar stem, downhill style handlebars.

Shimano Underbar style gear shifters.

Good wheels, can't remember the make... front one is fine, rear needs a buckle fixing before selling.

Any idea on the value? Should I get the parts fixed or just strip it and sell it as parts?

I'm looking at buying a rear deralieur (£10 off ebay) front chain set (no idea) chain (£6 of ebay) and getting the rear wheel de-buckled (no idea) and it'll be in perfect working order again.

Thanks.

<edit>

how about..

Frame: £40
Forks: £30
Bars: £10
Stem: £5
Brakes: £10
Seat: £5
Wheels/tires: £20

Looking on ebay those prices seem about right? I'd prob ebay all the bits as some might go for more, who knows...

Ok firstly, unless your bike is really special the sum of the parts will not be greater than the sale of the total bike.

If you intend on swapping the drivetrain, be aware that like motorbikes you will need to swap the cogs on the back also. If your back wheel is buggered so badly, it could be more worthwhile getting a complete new wheel (minus tires etc).

Aggressors were entry level bikes for GT, one of the lowest in the range to have an alloy frame. Brand new they're about 350 quid, so i'd probably start looking somewhere about 100 and working from there.

Just to let you know, shimano are the bad boys for gears on bikes, and for a mountain bike you'd ideally want to be purchasing anything that says Deore, LX, XT, XTR or DX. Avoid everything else.

For chainsets, go for the above, and Truvative.

Sachs do good chains, but ensure that when you buy one it is compatible for the number of cogs at the back (8 and 9 speeds require thinner-than-standard chains).

If you measure the distance between bottom bracket (axel where chainset goes) to the middle of the top tube along the seat tube, that'll be your frame size.

let me know what size it is? Very Happy

Hi Chris, The bike was £200 new, so definetly not worth £350.. It's the aggressor 3, silver frame model.. altho only difference I can see between the 3 and the upgraded 1 model is the frame colour and forks Laughing

By the time I fit even LX gearing etc it's not going to be worth selling really?! Surely I'd be better just breaking it, theres an aggressor 1 white frame on ebay going for £60 with time left on the auction, so surely I'd get £40 for mine... ?

Just not sure it's worth spending loads on decent shimano gears if I'm only going to get about £100 for the bike when fixed

My thoughts, having just bought two bikes from eBay.

Quote:
Frame: £40
Forks: £30
Bars: £10
Stem: £5
Brakes: £10
Seat: £5
Wheels/tires: £20

More like

Frame: £40 - at least, the GT badge will go a long way.
Forks: £30 - Having a laugh. Picked up some Judy XC's for £40.
Bars: £10 - No chance as new ones are soo cheap.
Stem: £5 - As above.
Brakes: £10 - £15 gets you a new set of V's.
Seat: £5 - Wont sell, picked a new WTB SST TI/Kevlar/leather for £10.45
Wheels/tires: £20 - A LOT more. Looking at £40 for the most basic wheels.

For a bike you're looking at over £100, maybe £150 on eBay. Most bike auctions go way over value esp with this hot weather.

People don't realise how cheap the bikes are in the first place. For example, a used 2004 bike will go for £280 while you can walk into your local shop and buy a brand new 2006 bike with much better spec for £350 and a free first service. Pick up a 2005 bike for £300.

Shine it up and put it on ebay and you won't be disapointed.

Also, 19" specialized Rockhopper A1 frame for sell.

Almost perfect condiction. Couldn't part with my RTS frame, so the hopper is up for sale.
