Well i did come off my bike today, aparently because of melting tarmac....but i can't see how putting dust and crushed rock down will help it in anyway

Unfortunately in this country, if the weather is too hot we have problems with the tarmac melting, and if its too cold we can't cope with a bit of ice and snow on the ground. You would think these days technology would be a bit more advanced so that we didn't have to face these relatively simple problems.

Anyway, just a quick reminder to you folk out there, be careful of putting your stand down directly on the tarmac without the aid of a puck because it won't take long for your (side) stand to melt into the tarmac and your bike will be over before you know it. I've seen it happen - but not to me!

It was on the roads on the way back from my holiday!

Road over the north yorkshire moors into whitby on wednesday morning last week, came back on the sunday afternoon and there was all that loose shite for about 6 miles - hated it and couldnt understand what it was / why it was there -

Seems very strange. Here in Australia last summer on the coast we got to near 50c and I mean near hottest we had was 47c and the roads didn't look near to melting.
I guess the compounds used over there would be more suited to colder temps and less likely to handle hotter extremes but even 32c seems a bit pissy to be honest.

Reminds me how often road changes or improvements can suck for us bike riders. Went for a cruise the other day around a hill which has a park in the middle. Its a nice loop but they have put new speed humps in. While I can appreciate their motivation, these ones are very short but high and almost spit you off the bike when taken even at reasonable speed.

Lucky enough you can squeeze between the gutter and the end of em nicely. Just shits me they haven't even considered all road users when adding them to the road.

The same result could have been had with the traditional hump.

Roads are designed to work within the normal temperatures they are exposed to. So the roads that are in other countrys that don't melt would crack with our cold winters, the only way around this is to use very very expensive materials, anyone fancy a council tax increase??lol thought not, like anything its a compromise.

The reason they are putting stone chippings down it to stop the tar sticking to your tyres as much. trying to make the roads have more grip, its all they can do.
If you look at the roads the tar seems to be coming through!, similar to a muddy field the chippings are being either pushed into it or pulled out of it, so they are putting more down.

Sounds like some of you have had the roads "dressed" rather than this rock dust, to prevet the tarmac sticking to your tyres.

Dressing is a cheapo way of "resurfacing" where they spray the surface with molten tar, then cover it in grey gravel. they then leve the traffic to clear the excess away. There's a section of my commute that was dressed about a month ago.. over 5 of the most perfect, near 90 degree bends in the area even now, theres still a shitload of loose stuff on the center lines, and only the car's tracks are 'safe'

I make a point of riding on the loose stuff, as carefully as possible, hoping that eventuially,. I'llg et it cleared enough I can get my pegs down there again
