anyone live in flats and owns a motorbike?

was just wondering if anyone here lived in flats and owned a bike and were/how you kept it at night?

i might be moving into my gfs place who lives in 2 storey flats shes on the top floor so i cant lock a bike outside the door and am abit worried locking it up downstairs

big concrete boxes with ground anchors planted in them if you can't put anchors in the ground,

shit rat bike that'll never work again used as an anchor.

Making a deal with somebody nearby with a garage or a back yard you can park in (I did this in exeter).

mix up some concrete blocks and sink anchors into them then, if you are a cheap ass, mix up some concrete blocks with holes in them (a simple wooden crate with poured in concrete and a plastic tube through the middle are ok.

and chain your bike to that, just don't make them too big 1m3 cubes of concrete a very good security but can't be moved by hand sack truck which may cause problems,

It's worth asking them, some of the ground anchors fold away flush with the road/pavement, so they might look favourable on it if you ask politely, especially if it's run on behalf of the council by a housing association.

I'm lucky in living in a rather posh set of luxury flats, as it has an electronically gated carpark at the back, and the other 5 flats are full of nosey old asian grannies who keep an eye on their mercs (and thus my bike).

reposted (again) concrete block solution from a much older post of mine

cheap and cheerful


The concrete block solution , learned from a mate who used to live in Hong Kong.


Get 2 ground anchors £15 each those that you cement into the ground , buy a couple of those cheapo plastic boxes really big ones used for general storage the cheaper the better as you will destroy them £1.50 each. ,


Now get a mate with a car , and go round to a builders yard or a ready mix concrete place (sometimes they bring it round to you)
and fill the boxes with concrete and put the ground anchors into the drying concrete , and leave it for a day or so hack off the plastic boxes and you have two solid blocks of concrete depending on how big you made them , which you can secure your bike to , if you make some steel reinforced concrete even better... £2 for the concrete £3 for some old steel £10 for a couple pints for an engineering student to build the reinforcement for you

Do not make gigantic cubic metre blocks as you will not be able to move them.


reinforced = better as a bloke with a big hammer can't hit it and crack it easily.


now buy yourself a hand truck , those L shaped things with two wheels that people who move lots of stuff have , and you can bring them into the house when not used and out when you park them £20 , buy one depending on the size and weight of the blocks you want to use.

Since you also have a car its even better make L shaped blocks with simple moulds and park the car over the bits that stick out with the wheels on the concrete slats ,

which serves as an OK hash of a ground anchor which is pretty cheap , however the weakness moved away from a bloke with a van lifting it away into the back of his van to the strength of your chain , but since it is your home immobile security you can use gigantic ship chains to lock it up.


BUT before you even consider this , calculate the weights involved and where you will store the blocks if asked to move them when not in use ,

i used to live in a flat. what i did was have a word with the council explain you are willing to provide your own security as long as they allow you to put a ground anchor in. if you go along the route of security will mean less chance of a crime being commited and therefore residents complaining to the council you may find they are willing to help you out.

failing that the ground anchor in a block of concrete is good...even better if ther is a bit of soil/ground that you can dig a hole and pour the concrete into that.
if the people on the ground floor have a bit of a garden they dont use why not offer to rent it off them to park the bike?

At my last place, 2 of us shared my 220 litre water butt full of concrete - was rare that we were both out at the same time, so there was always a bike using the space. Plus it was a stupid one to try and get a car into.

I live in a flat, not very big & i'm at the front so i can hear everything & always look out over it. It's chained to the grab rail with 2 chains. If you lived in a big flat where you can't always see the bike then i'd be very worried. And it's probably much easier to steal a bike from a flat.

The bike is parked outside the bedroom, quite area, hidden from view with just a disc lock and bike cover.

i live on an estate in london BUT have done all my life so the prob anit anyone FROM my estate its outsiders coming in but its parked with a few others bikes & i got 3 parked there & all locked to each other chain in front & back wheel,disk lock & alarmed

its hard to know EXACTLY your layout but just make sure its locked to a unmoveable object,etc either any other bike/s or some sort of post

I live in flats. 1st floor. Luckly the bike is just below me out the back. Kids have a nosey but once I said a few words not a finger print has been layed
I have a medium sized lock around the wheel to the non used washing line. Seems safe enough, You would have to have a few 7/8 foot men to lift it over. Disk lock on its way. If you lock it up a couple of times, will take them a fair bit of time to attempt to nick it surely?

What we do is block my bike in with our car (don't use the car much) I also cover the bike and have a big fat lock on it.

A crook moved 4 cars to get to a scooby in Radcliffe once , all of them bolted to the ground with anchors, bloody good theif was queit too cus nobody heard it until the engine roared into life

Depending on how you get to your door park it in the flat or hallway as long as it out of way and u sit near it 24/7 with a large axe and take hundreds of caffine tables the bike will be fine.

I lived 15 floors up in Brixtion many years ago & chained my bike to the railings in the car park. Some rastafarian pikey was sitting on it one evening & ignored me yelling from the balcony to get the fuck off my bike.
