I've sourced a potentially cheap 1989 FZR400 EXUP 3EN1, which I'm interested in knowing a little more about.

I've tried a Google search, but to little avail, can anyone shed some light on what these bikes are like to ride, run, performance, common problems, areas to look at, parts availability (is there a David Silvers for Yamaha?) enthusiast's websites, etc.?

Here's my 2p.

They have the same size and shape engine as the FZR600.

The Exup valves need checking and lubing.

They have weak clutches.

Thats the sum of my knowledge. Smile

handles as well as any other 400.
the engine is the weakest of the 400's in stock trim but in when tunes the best potentail out of all of them 100bhp has been had.

parts can be a bitch to find but usally are cheap-ish

fxr600, thundercat engines slot straight into the frame with no mods needed. people tend to do this when their engines blow up.

As you like your bikes to be immaculate (that reputation of your's follows you everywhere i'm afraid Laughing ) be aware that they have a steel frame (deltabox) which means once rust shows though you have to re-paint/powedercoat. Polishing the frame is not an option.

I was under the impression that the FZR400 had a fancy ally frame, and the fzr 600 had a steely...

lol, I don't like my bikes to be immaculate; I just scrub them up a bit Wink

The bike's going to be used everyday - let's see if I can finally rid myself of that reputation (chances are I won't be able to).

Never owned a JamJar, heard they usually burn a little oil as standard - will have to keep an eye on that. I did test ride a similar vintage TZR125 a few years back - this FZR looks quite similar visually.

Just done a bit of research as I jumped to conclusions that the 400 would have the same frame as my 600... but turns out Ram_doom's correct above, the 400 frame is indeed alloy so you can polish it to your hearts content Thumbs Up

try www.fzrarchives.com as well.

slot a newer FZR600 engine in the frame... no one has to know Shocked
