Not as fast as many of the modern supermotos and it is also quite a heavy machine. But it is a very reliable, probably more so than many of the faster SM bikes. They are also relatively cheap to buy used.

They wont be that cheap to buy used, as they have only been around for a year or so.

I don't really like them TBH! The Honda FMX650 looks nicer and more trendy, and the old DR350 was tougher and lighter, so it was nearly as quick. As a trail bike the DRZ seems better than as a road/SM machine. The gear ratio's are not too great for road use, with 4th and 5th being too far apart. The other thing i dont like too much is the slabby looking styling and the narrow uncomfy seat for road riding.

Id much rather stick to my KMX200 with it's better power to weight ratio, and more road orientated riding position and comfy lower seat etc.

interested to hear people opinions on this bike too. I ride a DT at the min and was looking at a DRZ400 as my first big bike. The 400SM is £4500 on the suzuki site. Ive seen 2 or 3 400S's going for around £2k on biketrader..

I really want the 400SM tho because it comes in black Very Happy

edit..

hadnt seen the fmx before! Damn those twin cans look sexual. How much are they going for secondhand? £200 more and you get 650 over a 400!

The SM is only a couple of years old, but the DRZ-E and DRZ models have been around for years and lots of supermoto conversions, just as good/better and a lot cheaper!

Great bikes for supermoto fun on a bit more reliable scale, but they are very tall bikes even for a supermoto so make sure you can reach the floor! I couldn't touch the floor at all on a DRZ with dirt wheels, yet I've owned KTM 525's and Yam WR's in the past! Laughing

I can only just touch the floor on my DT and im almost 5' 11". First thing that hit me when I got it was how tall it is. Supermoto's are generally lower anyways cos the suspension is setup for the road. Unless it was a conversion..

NO NO NO NO NO. The FMX 650 is a useless heap of shite for anything other than commuting. Yes, it looks nice but thats it. If you like a 650 single giving 37 horsepower and weighing 169 kilos DRY then go ahead. The DRZ-400 weighs about 138 kilos in 's' guise and about 125 in 'e' guise (both dry weights) and has around 40 horsepower.

Should make an ok road bike, if expensive.

Don't expect it to be very 'super' though.

the DRZ400 comes from the factory at 33bhp, restricted by a smaller carb to the enduro model (36 instead of 39mm i think), cams, thicker base gasket and obviosuly the exhaust.

https://www.jhsracing.co.uk/ - will increase the power upto 42-43bhp in a day for £1500 but when you put that next to the price of the bike it dosent sound all that great.

for a real world everyday bike though there spot on, engines are absolutely bullet proof and your not going to be servicing it every week. there are betetr choices out there but it depends if you want to sway towards practicality as opposed to balls out supermoto. a better option to look at maybe something like the KTM 625smc, alot more power and a lot more fun although they still dont require the harsh service times of some of the more highly tuned bikes.

I have both the DRZ400SM and an older DR350.
Both bought for commuting to work, and general larking around. The DR350 currently has road tyres, but now the DRZ is on the scene I plan to return the DR350 to its true off road guise.

The DRZ has a lot more balls than the DR350, and will easily do 90mph if you let it. Its a hoot for just larking around on. Its not uncomforable, I can over an hour without discomfort, which is far better than the SV650 I had until recently.

Its solid and robust, and not to tall for a shortie like me at 5-5.

It always gets admiring glances, maybe because its not all to common on the road.

Got mine for £4K OTR dealer new, even at that price I felt it a tad expensive.

Got to have a ride on a drz-400 the other day. Wasnt the sm version but its close enough. First impression..

Dont like the seat.. way too narrow which might prove painful on long journeys.

Brake/Gear levers in horrible position. Couldve just needed adusting as I wear mx boots and my mate wears sports racing boots but everything felt tight.

Nice torque with plenty in the bottom end but then I would say that after riding a 2T 125. Also im told by my mate it will wheelie from 1st to 4th and does around 70mph comfortably before it starts to bog down.

Weight wise I hardly noticed a difference to be honest.

If he means you can start a wheelie in first and go through the gears, well any bike that can wheelie should be able to do that.

If he means you can lift the front in fourth; I very much doubt that on road gearing.

I'd like to see it Smile - not that I've actually ridden one, mind. But have ridden bikes with similar power/weight, etc.

My mate used to stunt a DRZ and says it comes up in 4th ok.. hes in Parental Advisory DVD www.iq18films.com quite a few clips of him on the DRZ ... so he's not a bullshitter.

But was it standard road gearing, or trail gearing?

Trail gearing I can understand.

I meant it will wheelie from any gear upto 4th, off the throttle.. Didnt explain it too well.. Also it was the not the SM, so yes it would have the trail gearing Smile

Huge difference between the two.
SM is much lower, far better brakes, upside down forks and set up completely different, both suspension and engine. Seats the same though. Neutral
