just wondering alot of yamaha R6's sell with a miledge of around 20k

is there a reason for this?

for instance alot of cars sell before cambelt changes 60ishk miles. to avoid high costs for servicing =p

is thier something like this around 20k for the r6?

the only reason i ask is if i was to get one with around 20k on the bike. what do i need to expect and look out for.

also i would be driving it alot anyone know how reliable they are? are they good for 60k miles?

excuse my "newbieness" lol

cheers guys

There is, for R6s - but I suspect it's more likely coincedence.

R6 gear boxes, especially 2nd gear I think, have been known in some cases to go around that. But not /that/ common I don't think.#

A lot of R6s get used more for fun/summer use, so don't get that high mileage on them - so 20k is about right for one that's been used a bit each summer.

I was talking to my mates mate once who had a 99T R6. He had just clocked up 22000m and said that he would soon need to sell the bike, or otherwise get a replacement head from a low mileage R6, as the valves had begun to hammer the valve seats and cause valve seat recession. He said the bike had started to use a bit of oil too, due to this problem. All his mates had ZX9's Blackbird's Busa's or Blades, and he used to ride the bike very hard to keep up apparently, which he said is what causes the problem.

How true all the above is i don't know, but id be wary of a thrashed R6 of that mileage now, unless proved otherwise.

Has he actually had the valves checked at the stated intervals?

i tried an r6 with a noticeable problem in second gear

at less than half revs and less than half throttle it owuld pop out of gear for a second or so

when it happened on a straight i thought i could live with it, when it happened on a bend, it was very unnerving as it unsettled the bike

also, it had been fitted with a race can without rejetting so at low revs and low throttle, it wd cut out without warning which meant a bit of a topple if leant over

someone on here once said that the gear popping out thing can be fixed fairly easily but i cant remember how and im not convinced

if the bike got riden very hard and not looked after then you mate will have problems, harder the bike gets ridden you need to change oil and check valves more often, its more likly down to lack of tlc that has hurt his bike than the bike having any common age related problem

so i'm guessing buying a 2nd hand bike..... the problem is not knowing how the bikes have been ridden in the past.

what other 600cc bikes are out there with good reliablity stamped all over it?

im quite into the sport fairing looking bikes mind u =p

honda know how to screw a bike together and cbr's are not often bought by nutters they are seen as the sensiable option, but have a good look at the bike and chat to the owner that should tell you everything you need to know.

Anyone wanting a nice non thrashed 600 should buy my ZX6R, as it's one of the cleanest 2001 versions ive ever seen, it's still only done 8000m, and i don't think it's ever done more than 2000m or just over between oil changes. It's also never seen the red line, not with me riding it anyway![/img]
