Smooth Hammerite is the daddy when it comes to jobs like this. Allow it to cure properly and the stuff will give you a hard, durable finish. One large can of spray should do both fork legs. Build up a few thin coats to get a good finish without nasty runs or sags. Don't leave it too long between coats though. Once the Hammerite starts to 'cure' you can get nasty reactions with the solvent in the spray. You also, ideally, want to give it a couple of days to harden before you bolt the calipers/wheel etc back together, but that's not always possible.
The stuff can be used without a primer, but as Marki says, preparation is the key. Get rid of all the old paint, and give the alloy leg a good sandpapering to give the Hammerite something to key to. When spraying, any marks you can see beforehand will look 10 times worse with a glossy coat of paint on top
Avoid the hammered finish stuff.....yuck! |
