Any advice on Lap timers?

Anyone got any advice on lap timers? I'm thinking of getting my self one so I can track my progress on different tracks.
I'll be using on track days to start with.

I'm assuming I'll need a beacon as well as the device on my bike as a package.

Any recommendations < £100 would be appreciated?

Don't expect lap times to work at trackdays.

If you place a beacon in an obvious place, expect it to be confiscated.
In a less obvious place, an instructor may well not if their lap timer is working and check that area.

Some do work off a button press as well.

Or just hassle a friend to take some times down .

Take a mate with something that has a stop watch (like a mobile phone) with you, but not an actual stop watch, some track day companies frown upon timing full stop.

My missus usually times me with a couple of mobiles, shes worked out how to take split times now, which is cool. I can work out what my best lap would be by putting my best split times together.

Like has already been said, it is generally frowned upon.
To be honest there isn't a great deal of point, as unless you ride around without any consideration for everyone else, you won't get a true figure; and you'll get kicked off for riding that way.

The best/cheapest way to get an indication is to have a mate anywhere on the track with a stopwatch on their phone.

More subtle is to use a GPS unit and check the logs afterwards to work out the lap times.

Thanks for the advice, the timer was intended to track times for improvement over a year and at least be able to compare the level I'm at ..........against other riders.

Keith: can you point me in the direction of a GPS unit, I'm keen to have a sneek peek at it to see what it does and look like.

I usually find a lap timer works off the circuit beacon on trackdays, no guarantee though as sometimes they turn them off, not often though! You want to be a bit sensitive on using it, mount it discretely etc and you shouldn't have a problem.
As for which one, get a Rollcentre T100 or T200, costs a fraction over £100 new.

I think what G meant was, is the lap timer triggered at the start of each lap manually (pushing a button) or is it triggered automatically by an infra-red sensor picking up the circuit beacon?

Dum question... but are the "on bike pushing button laptimers" an off the shelf product or some ones home made device?

Some come with the bike as standard. Would be easy enough to bodge one, but can also get them off the shelf.
