I know lots of people think the CG is just some more road fodder, but I ask the people the own or have in the past, if you would give me your views. All I want is a simple bike to step up to from a moped, easy to use, but most of all cheap to run.

Plus my local Honda Dealer is going to give me £400 in a PX for my moped.

kurt.

When learning, I prefered the CG to the Yamaha SR in looks (the SR looks old Embarassed ) and riding position, comfortability and general handling.

There are plenty of second hand CGs for sale as once the test is passed most bikers get a bigger bike. They are built strong and last forever (so people say) amd you can guarantee that they have not been thrashed like a Aprilia RS by some batty boy.

It should do for you everything that is needed by a learner and may actually hold its money and not loose out too much on the resale Wink

I used to have a CG125. Mine was bought from new in 1980 and was my very first bike. I learnt to ride on it and had no problems with it at all. I also rode it from Brighton to Bournemouth (about 200 miles) and back when I took it on holiday, and don't remember feeling at all uncomfortable and it's good on the fuel consumption. You've also got reliable Honda engine and build quality. I would say go for it. Great little bike.

The latest CG125 ?

I absolutely love it.

I hired one last year and, I liked it so much, I took my test on it - and passed.

If I had the spare cash I'd buy a new one anytime for a plaything.

I think it's a wonderful little bike. Reasonably priced, virtually bombproof and you can flip it round corners like billy'o Thumbs Up

Just ignore all the others who bang on about their RS125's Razz

Just my opinion though Thumbs Up

I had a Honda CLR125 which is basically a CG and I loved it. It was so reliable, I had it a year and sold it for the price I paid Thumbs Up

As The Old Geeza said just ignore the rs125 people as there's maybe quicker but at least your will last longer Wink

I love CG125s

I did my cbt on a sr125 which is crap and made me think i dont like 4 stroke 125s so i got an rs125 instead. The rs125 is great fun on twisty country roads but I wouldnt call it reliable economical transport.

Then a year later when i was doing my DAS, I did the early stages on a CG125. I loved it, and it would have been a much better commuter bike for me than the the RS125.

Only problem I had with the CG125 was no disc brakes so in an emergency you wouldnt stop as quick. Fine most of the time though.

I would guess that newer CG125s have disc brakes.

So rs125 for twisties 50mph and above.

For 50mph and below and around town, the CG125 is much better really. I wouldnt really trust it above 50mph.

Having said that, some people dont have problems with their 2 stroke 125s, but they are still thirsty.

Looking back at your original post, the CG125 fits your bill very well. Extremely good on fuel, ultra reliable and definately a step up from a moped. Just don't expect to win any races on it.

I have a CG.

Couple of niggles with it mainly due to me being a perfectionist and paranoid but it's never ever been off the road unridable apart from when I had the chain and sprockets replaced on it.

The tyres are the OEM fitted ones and are made by a company called "IRC" (WTF?)

They've lasted 5 years and 12,000 miles, and still look like new :S Had the pegs down on them as well.

I get about 200 miles to 9 quids worth of fuel.

I change the oil every 1/2000 miles with Castrol GPS (about a tenner a bottle, not much to pay per month or 2)

That's about all I do, give it a good wash every so often and remove the chain guard when you feel like it and give it a good clean out, if you get a new one you won't have this problem as it's not a full enclosure.

It's not fast at all, but will put you in front of most cars at the lights on the morning commute up to about 30.

Great fun round the corners, once you get used you to you won't be scared of going about 50 on it, but feels a bit odd when you do it the first few times.

You should buy one, I've just about got bored of mine and that's after a year and 9,000 milesl.

I think most issues have been said.

The CG/CB's engine is very simple and very reliable, and requires little maintenance. Change the oil every 1,000 mi/2400kms and you're good to go. I check my oil every week. add if needed. Fuel economy is really good. This will save you lots of money. If you're used to riding a moped, the CG will be much of the same, just a little faster. If you are handy parts are easily available.

The CG won't win on speed, acceleration, looks (imho) or bragging rights, but for straight utility, economy and fun it can't be beaten. If more people rode a CG the world would be a better place.

I got a newish used (new shape) one after getting frustrated over failing my test and really have not regretted it. It's taken me the 25miles each way to work and back for a few months now without any trouble at all, gets about 85miles out of a gallon (and would do more if it didn't spend so much time on A/B roads) and is nothing if not confidence inspiring.

No, you get to clean all manner of road crap off your chain every few days instead Wink.
