2005 R1 Pinking - Pre Ignition

My 2005 R1 has 1200 miles on it. When I open the throttle in 3rd gear and above, and at low revs, (not the best practice I know!) it pinks. I never noticed it until a few hundred miles ago and my previous R1 (an 02 Fuel Injected) never did it..........Any ideas?

Its stock......no mods

Mmm, shouldn't do it then.

Running lean will encourage it, but shouldn't be close enough to pinking for that to be relevant.

Has it done it on more than one tank of fuel?

Are you using RON 95 gas and above?

I used to own a 2004 R1, and always used RON 97 or 98. Using too low an octane might cause pre-det.

I,m certain its pinking, but I am using ordinary unleaded. I will put super unleaded in when I fill her up and see if that makes a difference. Might be related, but I normally get about 140 miles before the fuel light comes on, so far its showing 157 miles and no fuel warning light yet!! Running leaner perhaps, but I cant see why, on a bike that has 1200 miles on it.

Presume it has a lambda probe and adjusts the fueling based on the feedback from it. Could have failed which would cause a fairly dramatic change. However also worth checking things like the airfilter (1200 miles isn't many so presume it has been parked up a bit, not unknown for a mouse to eat an airfilter).

Definitely sounds like a failed sensor, as kickstart says most likely lambda probe, but possibly a faulty MAP sensor could also make your bike run excessively lean. possibly wise to have a dealer check it out on their diagnostic gear. At 1200 miles old is it not still within warranty?
