Changed the front brake pads earlier and noticed that the bolts holding the calipers to the forks (2 bolts per caliper) all look like they've been, well, sort of stretched.
I can clearly see that they narrow near the centre.
I imagine that they've been over tightened in the past. Are they weak now and should I replace them? Or am I worrying about nothing?

Hi

Not sure on your bike. Some bikes are fitted with single use stretch bolts to hold the calipers on.

All the best

Keith

There's a 7 stamped on the end of them, any idea what that relates to?

Sorry to ask silly questions. I just didn't expect to see stretched bolts.

Hi

Surprised it has visably stretched (would have expected it to trash the thread in the alloy caliper before that point).

Not sure what the 7 refers to.

All the best

Keith

Keith, it's not just one bolt that has visably stretched, it's both bolts that hold on both calipers.

I think my best bet is to replace them, just for peace of mind if nothing else.

Hi

If they really have stretched visably then I would agree that you should replace them.

All the best

Keith

Yep replace ASAP, cleaned up a neighbours B6 calipers a few weeks ago and one of the bolts just snapped as we were tightening it up and that was with a torque wrench nowhere near the actual torque. The others were waisted so all 4 were changed. The "7" refers to the tensile strength of the bolt material and is the lower end of the high tensile scale, but it is the correct one.

7 isn't one I could find listed. Any idea what the strength is?

All the best

Thank you both very much.
I thought it didn't seem quite right for the bolts to be like this.
I'll get replacements asap.

Surprised its only got one number on it for bolts the property number is usually two digits, probably something to do with the Japanese origins? I know for instance that US bolts use a radial line rather than numbers to indicate strength.

For metric stuff the first digit is roughly 1/100 of the minimum tensile strength in MPa (megapascals). The second number is 1/10 of the ratio expressed as a percentage between minimum yield stress and minimum tensile stress.

So a fastener with a property class of 8.8 has a minimum tensile strength of 800 MPa and a yield stress of 0.8x800=640 MPa.

The designation system for metric nuts is a single digit. The number is roughly 1/100 of the minimum tensile strength in MPa. For example a nut of property class 8 has a minimum tensile strength of 800 MPa.

Suzuki bolts are made of a cheese / chocolate combination and should be changed for real ones.

I have changed the caliper bolts on my gixxer k4 for standard Honda 03 'blade ones. They may also work on your bike.

In 18 months the bolts on my bike have alll reacted badly to this UK weather we enjoy and I have replace them with titanium where possible or proper ones. Nothing bling mind you Laughing
