Helping regarding de-choking and ring piston changing

I have just bought my first bike a week back. It is Honda NSR 125R (2000). Mileage is 16500 km. How can I check if it needs de-choking and ring piston changing or not. Is there any easy method other than by looking at spark plug ? As far as I know it is never serviced before ... but it is still working properly somehow I have already done basic service like changing gear oil, air filter cleaning ( I had removed whole air box) and new spark plug. Bike is starting properly ... about sound I cannot say much as it is my first bike, there is smoke from exhaust at the start but it becomes less as the bike gets warm. Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.

Hi

Using modern oils they rarely need a decoke (although if you have the top end off the engine it is worth cleaning everything up).

Best thing to check is to do a compression check. From memory it should be 142psi +/- 14psi on the NSR.

if there is smoke,

you might have a oil gasket blown somewere but as for the piston ring changing

thats fairly simple but you will need a piston ring compressor unless you have strong enough fingers, lol

Anyone can explain me step by step how to change ring piston or point to some simple and clear workshop article ? also from where I can get cheap parts etc. I am living in germany and here it is very complex to find anything ( lots of rules for everything ). Thanks a lot.

If the performance is where it should be and it sounds OK leave well alone, as stated modern oils are very low ash.
Smoke initially then deminishing as you run is normal for a 2-stroke.

Best to deal with problems as they arise, ie as soon as you notice something has changed, obviously keep an eye on things like fluid levels, chain tension/lubrication and brake condition etc.

Golden rule- "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". keep the bike regularly serviced and use a good quality injector oil. Allow the engine time to warm up in the morning using the minimum amount of revs until it has.

Thanks for the help ... I found this manual on this forum before but it is for professionals not for begainers like me .... Jubal gave nice advice ... I will first look for compression test and then decide what to do...
