Just wondering, as I'm having a bit of a bike reshuffle. May have been discussed before, but what's good about biking for you?

The good thing for me is that its not an everyday thing. It's something I can look forward to and enjoy as a hobby as I dont use my bike as main transport or to get to work.

I done that when I was 17 until about 25, biking everyday, work and back etc... and I much prefer how it is now, rather than a have to, it's something to look forward to.

Thumbs Up

Sailing past stationery traffic.

When I go past long lines of traffic, or filter for miles at a time it all starts to make sense Smile

Overtaking Thumbs Up To many it's just a necessary evil to be endured to get to the car free stretches. Whilst I also enjoy clear roads I just can't help feeling like a fighter pilot of the roads as I cut up cars Mr. Green

I think it's because I've driven cars for a few years before I did my bike license. Experiencing first hand how frustrating it is being stuck 50 cars back in a long line held up by the annoying old twat up front doing a steady 50mph in his maroon coloured Rover Evil or Very Mad

Work bike: shaving 1.5 hours off my daily commute-time over when I use the van.
Play bike: hard to describe - building it - riding it. Knowing that it's all down to me I guess.

That feeling of getting a corner just right.

There's a piece of road near me that has quite a bumpy section, and if you hit it at about 90 or so it'll make the bike shake it's head nicely while your leant over a bit, not in a scary way, it's just fun and gives you a nice buzz. Makes you feel like your right on the limit (probably am). A car wont give me something like that.

Being able to shit all over £20K+ sports cars on a little 400.

i love commuting all the time in the pouring rain Thumbs Up .

best thing about biking that i like other than taking the beautiful girl at work for a ride pillion is when i am on the motorway and a car tries to drive on my ass and make me move over is to take off at 130-140 mph and watch as they turn into a dot in my mirrors.

i can do that all day long Thumbs Up

so to sum up

toying with cars is the best thing about biking

The solitude.
And the simplicity.

In a car you can have other people, radios, crisp wrappers, empty cans or milkshake cartons, fag packets, dogs, children, and a multitude of other distractions. They come in useful in inclement weather or on a big shopping trip.

But on a bike, the most you can have is you and (if you are in the mood) one other person, who you have to REALLY REALLY like to go anywhere with not much else than some tools, a packet of fags, a bit of ready cash, and maybe a change of pants.

Because I believe that despite the loudness of wind or whatever else, at least without earplugs (or, indeed, the distraction of an Ipod) - I am more likely to hear what's going on in the traffic - whether oncoming or behind me, as well as any changes to the sound of my bike, rattles, whines, wheezes, etc.

With your earplugs in, can you hear police cars or fire engines coming up behind you? Or do you just wait until you see their flashing lights in your mirrors?
