Ive just gone to stick a CD in my PC and the drawer opened as normal.
Then nothing
Light flashed on CDRom Drive. and still nothing.

Went into my computer, and the only device in thre is my 3.5in Floppy drive. The CDrom drives arent there.

Any ideas?

The were working the other day though, As normal.

My twopenneth

I take it your hard drive was still listed?

My daughters PC has does this and in her case it seems to be related to overheating (I know it sounds odd).

If trying another cd and a restart produces no results the next thing is to open up that case and reseat the hard drive cables. I find its best to disconnect and then reconnect rather than just having a look to see that they are connected.

Are the fans all spinning up when the PC boots?

All this assumes you have made no changes since it last worked and no one has been playing in the BIOS!!

Check cables as mentioned.

Trya different power cable and refit the ide cable.

Could just be a broken drive.

Ive got 2 CDrom Drives, Neither of them work.
In the Drivers Window both CDRom drives have "!"s next to them.

Ive been told its a common XP fault.

ive backdated the PC to before when they were working. And still nothing.

Gona have a little lookie inside the Tower I think.

If you remove the CD-drives in device manager, reboot, do they re-add themselves automatically, or do they still show the '!'...?

It maybe your usual IDE driver has been overwritten and perhaps windows is using it's own naff one. If the above doesn't work, download the latest Motherboard IDE drivers for your machine, and then update them in 'Device Manager'.

Did you check the cables as suggested earlier?

Thumbs Up

Checked cables.
When I uninstall the drivers and reboot. They re add as "Unknown hardware" no software found etc. Still with the "!".

Fugging nightmare!

ok something that can cause this is.

do you have any third party cd writing softwear installed on your PC?

roxy cd creator, or any thing else??

these are know to interfea with the windows drivers. and you can find the information about it on the microsoft knowlage base.

the only way to get around it is to uninstall the softwear and reboot!

roxy cd creator is well known for causing this. and i have a number of PC each week i see with it.

very unlickly this will help i think.
the windows IDE drivers are probable the most stable you will get. however they some times do not give the same proformance as mother baord manafactured drivers.

the fix below should also work Wink
we use this whenn we get the same problem
just go in the the registry and dele the keys

1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
NOTE: If you are getting a code 39 message, it may be that additional third-party filter drivers were added to UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in addition to Adaptec filter drivers. In that case, you may try to remove the non-Adaptec filter drivers first, leaving the Easy Creator filters in place to see if the Code 39 goes away. If you still receive an error code 39, 32, or 31 message, remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely in the preceding key.

2. Restart your computer.

Ok, I didnt understand a word of that ^ Laughing

ive tried uninstalling both drivers. Restarting. Comp re-installs them, restarts again. And still they dont work.

What if I was to save everything to a memstick duo, And then format the PC. Run the Compaq drivers. And reintall everything.

Would that help?

Would doing that make me loose my virus software which im paying Monthly for?

Depends on the age of your machine. HP & Compaq merged about 5 or 6 years ago. So machines may share same components.

FWIW HP PCs do not change their internal components very frequently.

ok here goes Wink

click on the start button
then click where it says run,
in the box that comes up type regedit and press return.

a program will open up with a tree/menu on the left hand pane and a big pane on the right hand side
on the left hand pane find and expand hkey local machine (click on the little + to the left of it) . then carry on expanding system... currentcontrol set... etc etc
till you can see a big list of things simmler to the {4d36e965-e....... part
left click on this when you see it (actualy on the name not on the little + symble if there is one) and in the right hand screen will apper some values.
find where is says upper and lower values then clcik once on them to highlight them and hit hte delete key. (confim you want to delete them by chocing yes)

once you have done them both jsut restart the PC.
And belive me it does work! jsut make sure these 2 values are the only thing you delete.
The registory is not a good place to play in. you can cause nasty things to start happening!!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

But will that be

Moniter 1
Moniter 2

Or will it be

Moniter 1 * 2

I want to have 2 seperate moniters where I can have 2 lots of windows.

Ive got a graphics card, and Ive also got a moniter output on the motherboard, built in sort of thing.
But when I plug a moniter into this I get a blank screen.

Yes you can have monitor 1 and 2.

Most motherboards disable the onboard graphics when you install another.

do you get 2 monitors showing in your display properties. Like so
