Hi guys,

Anyone know the procedure for changing brake fluid? My stuff is brown and spongy as fuck...

I can't get hold of a GS500E manual at the moment and it needs doing.

Are these any good? Theyre in Halfrauds for a tenner: https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_195481_langId_-1_CarSelectorCatalogId__CarSelectorGroupId__varient__categoryId_33975_crumb_33965_parentcategoryrn_33975

Also what brake fluid should I use? Seen some Castrol DOT4 stuff in Halfrauds.

Cheers.

Shouldn't be too tricky to bleed if you want fresh fluid in. Just attach a length of clear pipe to the caliper nipple and take the lid off the master cylinder. Slacken the bleed nipple and pump the brake lever, the level will fall (don' let it fall too far or you'll get air in the system). Top up with fresh fluid, repeat till clean fluid comes out the caliper, tighten bleed nipple with lever back to bars, top up master cylinder, refit lid, job done.

What do you mean the lever will fall? As in fall towards the throttle grip?

Cheers,

T

Going round to a mates tonight who's gonna help me,

Will fit braided lines at some point too when I've got a bit more cash lol.

The rear brake pedal has a lot of travel and feels squishy as fuck so I'll do that one too.

Cheers,

What type of fluid reservior do you have. If it's the round pot type it's much better and easier to pressure bleed them with a Gunson EZbleed for £15.

Pumping the lever gets the brakes working ok but imo never gets all the air out.

motrax do a nice no-return brake bleeding tube kit works a treat so you can do it by yourself without any help. hardest part is making sure you dont let the resievour run out of fluid.

as for brake fluid type get a synthetic type castrol or some equal good make will do the trick

I think all I need to do with this kit is mount it over the nipple and squeeze the brake lever, and then click the valve until the fluid is out while filling up the master cylinder...

I bought the halford thingie, found it useless and threw it away (the valve wasnt any good). I ended up using a piece of tubing and a syringe. I have heared very good things of the mityvac kit, but it is much more expensive. https://www.mityvac.com/pages/products_hvpk.asp#MV6817

Yes, you can buy a special kit, or you can get a length of plastic tube from B&Q for 50p.

I did mine at the weekend, and as long as you can reach the brake caliper and lever/pedal at the same time, you can do it yourself.

Take your time, and keep an eye on the reservoir as if you run out of fluid in it you'll have to start again.

Where abouts are you? You're welcome to drop in for a brake bleeding session at Gordo Towers (Cambs).

HTH Smile

I've done it

That halfords thing was fucking awesome, don't need to close the nipple every time.

Nearly did a stoppie at the first set of lights... LOL

Also adjusted my chain and other bits, so I'm all set Very Happy

Washed the kit out with water and left it at me mates tho lol (Don't worry, the valve comes apart to clean so I'm not going to be putting water in the brakes LOL

So that overpriced piece of crap is actually worth the money? Brilliant. How does it work?

It's a clear plastic tube that attaches to a valve, lets the fluid through but doesn't let anything back up so you don't need to tighten and untighten the bleed nipple, you just leave it open.

Or you could leave the nipple open and just use a bit of tube. When you are happy with the fluid coming out of the caliper, you squeeze the lever to the halfway point slowly while tightening the bleed nipple. Save yourself a tenner.

Cheers

Oops, I didn't squeeze the lever while tightening the nipple

If you're using a valve, you shouldn't have to.

What happens when you let go of the lever is that the seals regaining their shape pull the pistons back into the caliper ever so slightly. When the bleed nipple is shut, this draws fluid into the caliper from the reservoir, when the nipple is open, this draws air into the caliper through the nipple. The valve should stop this happening.

FYI, I always do another minor brake bleed a week after the first one, any tiny air bubbles should have vibrated up to the bleed nipple with riding. All you have to do is to crack open the nipple and do about half a squeeze on the lever then tighten the nipple whilst holding the lever at the halfway point.

Cheers

Grim

I found that Halfords thing was crap and got a refund. I think it was the same as the Motrax 'Mini-Bleeder'

I really couldn't work it out as no matter how I practiced with pipes, syringes and water it always let fluid, and air in from both directions as the ball bearing inside wasn't a good enough seal.

I thought it was going to be the wonder kit for a tenner, but went back to doing it the old manual way.

If your looking for braided hoses, there is a guy on Ebay (wezmoto iirc) who sells goodridge complete kits for £40. They are Zinc fittings not stainless but these are fine for general day to day use. I've had a set for a while now and they have been great.

buy some goggles from machine mart of something , Brake fluid can make you go blind if it goes in your eye ,

if you see what it does to paint , think what it can do to your eye.
